DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University Women's Golf Associate Head Coach
Jon Whithaus has been named the 2020-21 Division I Golf Pride Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Assistant Coach of the Year as announced on Wednesday.
Since joining Duke as an assistant coach in 2014, Whithaus has helped lead the Blue Devils to an NCAA Championship in 2019, two NCAA Regional titles, three ACC Championships and six postseason appearances.
After not competing in the fall of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke finished in the top three in every tournament throughout the spring 2021 season, including first-place finishes at the Gamecock Intercollegiate, Cavalier Match Play and the ACC Championships. Whithaus also helped guide Duke to an appearance in the semifinals of match play at the NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils boasted four WGCA All-Americans in 2020-21, which was the most from a single team in the nation.
Whithaus is the only coach in NCAA Division I to lead both a women's (2016, 2019) and men's (2011) program into the match play semifinals of the NCAA Championship. He has also coached both a women's and men's individual to an NCAA Individual Championship.
Since joining the women's golf program at Duke, Whithaus has helped coach national player of the year selections Leona Maguire and Celine Boutier along with eight other All-American selections.
He was an associate head coach for the Duke men's golf program from 2009-12 and was the head coach of the Ohio Wesleyan men's golf program from 1997-2009.
Whithaus has coached women's and men's student-athletes that have gone on to win on seven of the biggest tours in the world -- LPGA Tour, Ladies European Tour, Symetra Tour, PGA Tour, European Tour, Web.com Tour and Challenge Tour.
