Moore Selected Watkins Award Winner

DURHAM – The National Alliance of African American Athletes announced Duke freshman Jordan Moore as the winner of its Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Award.
The honor is awarded annually to the nation's top African American male high school scholar-athlete. The Sykesville, Md., native was selected from a group of six semifinalists nationwide.
Moore, a quarterback who graduated from Loyola Blakefield High School in December of 2020 and enrolled at Duke in January, was a three-star prospect and four-year letterwinner for the Dons.
At Loyola he participated in the Black Student Union and Peer Education Group and volunteered to mentor disadvantaged youth in Baltimore City, focusing on helping them with STEM studies. Moore was also named one of two winners of the 3M Player to Win Award, presented by the Military Bowl and 3M.
On the field, Moore was charted as the No. 26 and No. 27 dual threat quarterback in the nation by ESPN.com and Rivals.com, respectively. In three-plus seasons (senior year cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic), Moore recorded 3,410 passing yards and 36 passing touchdowns while rushing for 1,120 yards and 11 scores.
He becomes Duke's 10th student-athlete named as a finalist for this award and third recipient, joining Vince Oghobaase (2005), Matt Daniels (2008)*, Deion Williams (2012), Zavier Carmichael (2014), Brandon Hill (2016), Rakavius Chambers (2017)*, Mataeo Durant (2018), Jaylen Coleman (2019), and Michael Reese (2020).

Selection for this award is based on unweighted grade-point average, personal statements, extracurricular activities, community service and letters of recommendation.
ABOUT THE ALLIANCE AND THE FRANKLIN D WATKINS MEMORIAL AWARD
The National Alliance of African American Athletes was founded in 1989 and its mission is to empower African American males through athletics, education and public programs. Since 1992, The Alliance has annually presented the Watkins Award to the nation's elite high school student-athletes. The award is named for the late Franklin D. Watkins, who coached championship football and basketball teams in Harrisburg, Pa. Past winners include Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston and Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle, as well as several others who went on to play in the NFL.
