MUNDELEIN, Ill. – Duke University rising junior
Megan Furtney continued her solid play at the Illinois State Women's Amateur Championship on Wednesday by collecting a pair of victories to advance to the semifinals of match play at the Pine Meadow Golf Club in Mundelein, Ill.
A native of St. Charles, Ill., Furtney opened the morning against 15th-seeded Millie Lawson and collected a 5&4 victory to move on to the next round. Furtney was solid on the opening nine winning the third hole to take a 1UP lead and then won four straight from No. 5-8 to take a commanding 5UP lead through eight holes. Lawson took holes No. 9 and No. 10 to cut into the lead, but Furtney won the 12th and 13th to go five up with five to play. Â
In the quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon, Furtney once again got off to an excellent start by winning holes No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 to take a 3UP lead. She led 4UP over 10th-seeded Audrey Tir through seven holes, before Tir won No. 8 and No. 9. Furtney won No. 10 and No. 11 to increase her lead to 4UP and closed the match with a birdie on No. 14 for a 5&4 win. Â
Second-seeded Furtney will face 22nd-seeded Mackenzie Hahn on Thursday morning in the semifinals. The winner will go on to the championship match that will take place at 1 p.m. (ET).
