DURHAM, N.C. – For just the second time in program history, the Duke women's cross country and track & field program has finished in the top-10 in points for the Terry Crawford Women's Division I Program of the Year Award. The Blue Devils finished 10th overall with 89.5 points, while BYU finished first with 18 points.
The finish is the second highest in program history, after the 2010-11 Blue Devil women finished seventh. Women's cross country and track & field was remarkably consistent across the board, as one of only eight programs in the country to finish in the top-35 in the NCAA women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field championships, headlined by a 27th place finish from women's cross country.
Senior
Erin Marsh contributed a third-place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships and a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to lead the way in individual performances. Graduate students
Brittany Aveni and
Cha'Mia Rothwell, seniors
Lauren Hoffman and
Leigha Torino and the 4x400m relay team of
Iman Sule,
Elena Brown-Soler, Hoffman and Aveni all added top-10 finishes nationally between the two NCAA track & field championships.
The award is given annually to the most outstanding cross country/track & field programs in each of the NCAA's three divisions, the NAIA and for each gender in those levels. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA or NAIA Championships.
Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner.
