DURHAM –Seven members of the Duke men's soccer team have been selected to the 2020 All-ACC Academic team as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Devils' seven honorees are tied for the most with Clemson.
Goalkeeper
Will Pulisic headlines the list for the Blue Devils with his fourth All-ACC Academic Team award, while
Matthias Frick garners his third. Joining the two recent graduates on the team are first-time recipients – graduate student
Jack Doran, junior
Eliot Hamill and freshmen
Lewis McGarvey, Peter Stroud and
Thor Ulfarsson.
Pulisic is the lone player on this year's 47-person list to earn the distinction four times, while Duke accounts for three of the six true freshmen selected as McGarvey, Stroud and Ulfarsson were honored for their excellence on the field and in the classroom.
Duke is also the lone squad to have a pair of goalkeepers represented as Pulisic anchored the defense in the fall portion of the season before graduating in December. Hamill came in and won the starting job in the spring and posted a pair of shutouts.
Frick and McGarvey also were integral pieces to Duke's defensive efforts, playing 1,517 and 1,460 minutes apiece, respectively. A team captain, Frick provided the steady force at center back, while McGarvey was the Blue Devils' aerial specialist and a strong holding midfielder.
Ulfarsson garnered recognition after joining the Blue Devils in January and proceeding to lead Duke in scoring for the entire season with four goals and an assist. Doran contributed a career-best three goals in his final season as a Blue Devil, while Stroud was the Blue Devils' engine in the midfield.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Duke finished the unique 2020-21 season with a 4-10-3 overall record and a 4-6-1 mark against ACC foes.
