DURHAM – Duke football head coach David Cutcliffe announced the program's annual spring football award winners.
Nine Blue Devils were acknowledged for their outstanding performances during the 2021 spring practice period. Beginning this year, Duke renamed its spring awards after former Blue Devils.
On the offensive side of the ball, junior wide receiver Darrell Harding Jr. was given the Jamison Crowder Award. Harding Jr. saw action in all 11 games in 2020, compiling 160 yards on 12 receptions. Redshirt junior offensive guard Maurice McIntyre was awarded the Laken Tomlinson Award. Last fall, McIntyre played in nine games, starting three at left guard, and was on the field for 293 total snaps.
Defensively, graduate student and safety J'Marick Woods earned the Ross Cockrell Award. During his first year in Durham, Woods played in nine games, making two starts against Boston College and Virginia Tech. He recorded 22 tackles and one pass breakup on the season. The Justin Foxx Award was presented to rising sophomore defensive tackle Gary Smith III. Also playing in his first year in a Duke uniform in 2020, Smith II saw action in 10 games. The Shelbyville, Tenn., native accumulated nine tackles during his rookie campaign as well.
Redshirt juniors Shaka Heyward and Jeremiah Lewis both were acknowledged with special teams awards. Heyward claimed the Alonzo Saxton II Award, while Lewis was awarded the Juwan Thompson Award. In 2020, Heyward step up during his first full year in a starting role and led the team in tackles with 80. He also added 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one fumble recovery and four quarterback pressures in 11 games played. Lewis saw action all 11 games, making eight starts. The Plano, Texas., product finished with 46 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a team-high 10 pass breakups.
Closing out the honors were senior Cole Carteaux, junior Trevor Horton and redshirt sophomore Mason Russell who all garnered the Jeff Faris Blue Devil Heart Award.
Duke opens the 2021 season at Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 4.
