DURHAM – With the Duke men's and women's golf programs getting set for NCAA Regional action, the Blue Devils have now raised $13,365.25 on the season for the Birdies for Babies program, which benefits the Duke Children's Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.
Over the last four years, the program has now brought in $60,667.25 to help Duke Children's.
Freshman Ian Siebers of the men's golf program posted a top-10 finish to lead the Duke men's golf team at the 2021 ACC Championship, as the stroke play portion of the championship concluded recently at the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga. After rounds of 66 and 69 on the first day, Siebers carded a 73 in round three to finish tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard, marking the best finish by a Duke freshman at the ACC Championship since Brinson Paolini tied for fourth in 2010.
The men's program awaits the NCAA Regional selection show, which will air Wednesday, May 5, at 2 p.m. on Golf Channel.
The women's program is coming off collecting its 22nd ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The Blue Devils earned the No. 1 seed after three rounds of stroke play with an 11-under-par ledger. In match play, Duke earned a 3-2 victory over Virginia in the semifinals and then collected an impressive 5-0 victory over Florida State to claim the title.
Junior
Gina Kim turned in three straight rounds in the 60s during stroke play to become the 14th Blue Devil and 20th overall Duke golfer to win medalist accolades at the ACC Championship.
The Blue Devils earned the No. 1 seed in the Columbus Regional and will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to compete May 10-12.
Those looking to support Duke's partnership with Duke Children's can make pledges per birdie. Pledges will start at $0.50 and higher pledge increments are welcome. If the Blue Devils register an eagle (counts as two birdies), albatross (three birdies) and hole-in-one (four birdies) they will count as stated.
The creation of the program was spearheaded by 2019 Duke graduate
Virginia Elena Carta. A native of Udine, Italy, Carta was a four-time All-ACC selection and the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion. The 2016 WGCA All-America and Honda Award winner turned in a NCAA-record 16-under-par ledger of 272 as a rookie to register her first collegiate victory. She became one of only four Blue Devils to win both a NCAA Individual and team NCAA title.
