PIEMONTE, Italy – Duke University women's golf 2019 graduate Virginia Elena Carta is set for her professional debut this week as she will compete in the Ladies Italian Open May 28-30 in her home country of Italy. The tournament is part of the Ladies European Tour and this stop will be in Piemonte, Italy at the Golf Club Margara.
Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, recently received an "Mphil" in Environmental Policy at Cambridge, which is equivalent to a Masters degree in the United States. She also completed a degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy at Duke.
The Ladies Italian Open will be contested over three days with 126 competitors. The top 60 and ties will advance after 36 holes.
With two degrees in hand, Carta has now turned her focus on professional golf.
Her amateur resume is very impressive as she is one of just 20 golfers in NCAA history to win both a NCAA individual and team championship at Duke. Carta bookended her collegiate career with a NCAA team title as a senior in 2019 and a NCAA Individual title as a freshman in 2016. She became the 14th Blue Devil to earn four All-ACC accolades over her career and finished in the top 20 of four straight ACC Championships.
Carta helped lead Duke to two ACC Championships in 2017 and 2018, while being a part of 14 team wins over four years with the Blue Devils. Over her career, Carta has competed with Italy in the Vagliano Trophy, European Ladies' Team Championship and has been a member of the Italian National Team since 2010. She was the runner-up in the 2016 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
