Â
DURHAM – The draws for the 2021 Men's Tennis NCAA Doubles Championships were released Saturday and
Sean Sculley and
Garrett Johns found out their first-round opponent.
Â
Duke's top doubles tandem will face the No. 3 overall seed in Pat Harper and Adam Walton of Tennessee in the opening round of doubles play on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. All doubles matches will be best two-out-of-three sets with six point tiebreaks used when a set is even at 6-6. In doubles play a 10-point super tiebreak will be used in lieu of a third set.
Â
These two doubles pairs are familiar foes as they have already matched up earlier in the regular season. During that meeting on Feb. 5, Sculley and Johns bested Harper and Walton 6-4 on the top court in Knoxville, Tenn.
Â
Sculley and Johns, who are ranked No. 20 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, received an at-large bid to the national event. The two are the first Duke doubles team to reach the 32-team field sinceÂ
Spencer Furman andÂ
Nick Stachowiak did so in 2017.
Â
The senior-sophomore pair of Sculley and Johns formed the Blue Devils' top doubles team, going 9-9 overall and 8-8 on court one. The tandem, which earned its highest ranking of No. 12 on April 14, recorded its last victory against No. 45 Fabien Salle and Matthew Fung of Louisville in the ACC Championship second round on April 22. Sculley and Johns, who went 4-4 in ACC action, held a top-20 national ranking throughout the entire season and have gone 4-5 against ranked opponents.
