COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the temperature dropped and winds picked up, the scores rose in the second round at the NCAA Columbus Regional with the Duke women's golf team shooting a 10-over, 298, on Tuesday. The Blue Devils dropped one spot to third with 18 holes remaining at the 6,335-yard, Par 72 The Ohio State Golf Club Scarlett Course.
Needing to finish in the top six to advance to the NCAA Championship, the Blue Devils are currently in third place with rounds of 287 and 298 for a 9-over, 585. Georgia surged late on Tuesday to take the team lead with a 1-over, 577, with Michigan (584), Duke (585), Kent State (589), Arizona State (592), Kentucky (593), Virginia (595), Vanderbilt (597), Oklahoma (598) and Clemson (602) rounding out the top 10.
"Just chatted with the team a minute ago," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "We are playing good golf. We are doing our job, nobody got impatient and everyone played hard. We just need to go into tomorrow doing the same and being the same golfers we are right now. I think we are eight shots back and this is still very, very doable."
After getting off to a great start Monday, the Blue Devils featured a slow start in the second round as all five golfers had at least one bogey over the first four holes. Duke shot 4-under-par on the par-5 fourth hole in the first round, but was 3-over on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils did start to get things going late on the front nine as freshman
Anne Chen collected back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9, freshman
Phoebe Brinker added a birdie on No. 8 and senior
Jaravee Boonchant birdied No. 9. Only problem was the squad was 9-over-par on No. 10 and No. 11. Seven birdies over the final seven holes brought the Blue Devils back though.
"It was definitely a harder day, that is why the numbers are higher," said Brooks. "You can't let that make you think you are not playing your game. They're all doing a great job."
Junior
Gina Kim and Boonchant paced Duke in the second round with a 2-over, 74. Kim remains in the top five and enters the final round five strokes behind Georgia's Jenny Bae, who carded a 4-under, 68, in the second round and is at 5-under, 139, through 36 holes.
A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim opened her day with back-to-back bogeys but then rolled in a 12-footer for birdie on No. 3. She went on to notch six consecutive pars that included a sand save par on the seventh hole, which nearly went in from the bunker. Kim made the turn at 1-over, 37, and opened the back nine with a bogey on No. 11. On hole 12, Kim went for the par-5 green in two and landed in the greenside bunker. She once again showed her bunker skills and stuck it to six feet, before draining the birdie.
Kim made it two straight birdies and she hit her 7-iron from 152 yards to four feet and sank the birdie on No. 13. She featured good looks for birdies on No. 14 and No. 15, but the putts wouldn't drop. Kim suffered two straight 3-putt bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17, before closing her day with a par on No. 18. She hit 13 greens, 11 fairways and had 33 putts on day two.
Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, opened her round with a bogey on No. 1, but then reeled off seven straight pars. As she closed the back nine, Boonchant rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on the 357-yard, par-4 ninth hole to make the turn at even par. She suffered bogeys on No. 10 and No. 11, before heading to the par-5 12th hole. Boonchant hit her drive right into the trees and was forced to punch down the fairway. Facing 198 yards to the green, she hit her hybrid to five feet and drained the impressive birdie. Boonchant suffered two more bogeys on 14 and 15, but drained a 6-footer for birdie on No. 16. She collected a sand save for par on No. 17 and just missed a birdie on No. 18 to finish with a 74. Boonchant enters the final round tied for 13th with a 3-over, 147, after hitting 10 fairways, 12 greens and rolling 32 putts.
Both Chen and Brinker signed for rounds of 3-over, 75, on Tuesday.
Chen, a native of Sugarland, Texas, is tied for 19th with a 4-over, 148. She came out of the gates a little slow in the second round and was 3-over-par over her first seven holes. Chen then rolled in a 40-footer for birdie on No. 8 and then sank a 6-footer for birdie on No. 9 to get back to 1-over for the day.
After back-to-back bogeys to open the back nine, Chen drained a 17-foot birdie on the 473-yard, par-5 14th. She added a late bogey on her way to closing with a 75. Chen hit 12 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts.
Brinker was 2-over-par during her first seven holes but made a great up-and-down on No. 5 to keep her score low. From 133 yards on No. 8, Brinker hit her 9-iron to four feet and sank the putt for her first birdie of the day. She had bogeys on No. 11, No. 14 and No. 15 on the back nine, while collecting another impressive up-and-down on No. 13 as she drained a long putt for par. Brinker, who hails from Wilmington, Del., rolled in a right-to-left 20-footer for birdie on No. 18 to finish her round with a 75 and enters the final round tied for 21st with a 5-over, 149. She hit 12 fairways, 12 greens and had 32 putts.
After signing for a 1-under, 71, on day one, sophomore
Erica Shepherd had two bogeys on the front nine as she made the turn with a 2-over, 38. She went bogey, double-bogey to open the back and then added another bogey on No. 15 to get to 6-over-par. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., closed strong with two pars and drained an eight-foot birdie on No. 18 to finish with a 77. She is tied for 19th overall with a 148.
The top six teams following the final round Wednesday will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will take place May 21-26 in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Due to expected frost overnight, tee times were pushed back one hour and the Blue Devils will open action Wednesday in the final round beginning at 10:50 a.m. along with Georgia and Michigan.
