GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Duke softball team reeled in a program-record four All-ACC First Team honors with two position players and two at-large selections, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Junior
Deja Davis earned First Team honors at shortstop while senior
Jameson Kavel was one of three outfielders earning a spot. Two Duke pitchers received at-large positions as junior
Shelby Walters and senior
Peyton St. George and claimed the honors.
The Blue Devils' four All-ACC First Team selections were the most of any program as Clemson and Florida State both had three representatives. The only other Blue Devil to earn All-ACC First Team honors was graduate student
Raine Wilson in 2018.
Leading Duke at the plate during the 2021 campaign, Davis boasts a .411 batting average with a team-high 60 hits and an on base slugging percentage of 1.162. The lead-off hitter has registered nine doubles, an ACC-leading six triples, seven home runs, 28 RBIs and 11 stolen bases this season. The Cerritos, Calif., native has had 16 multi-hit games, six multi-RBI games and the longest hitting and reached base streaks on the team at 14 and 21, respectively.
Kavel continues to show her consistency throughout her career as the senior holds a .353 clip on the season – the second highest batting average on the team. She leads the team with 39 runs scored, 13 doubles, 18 walks and 16 stolen bases. The Duluth, Ga., native has tallied 55 hits and 32 RBIs on the year.
Having a stellar junior season in the circle, Walters has compiled a 16-3 record with a team-low 1.20 ERA through 122.2 frames in 26 appearances in which she's made 20 starts. The Cohutta, Ga., native has thrown eight complete games, two shutouts and racked up 75 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .198 batting average. Walters inked her named in the record books this season as the first Blue Devil to record a no-hitter (March 4) and she was recently a part of the program's first combined no-hitter (May 7). She ranks 19th nationally in ERA and fourth in the league.
St. George has put together a strong showing during the 2021 campaign as the senior has a 16-6 record in 30 appearances in 130.2 innings with a 2.14 ERA. She's tossed 11 complete games, including four shutouts, and has amassed a program-record 174 strikeouts. St. George earned three weekly pitching awards during the season (Feb. 16, March 2 and March 16). The honor comes as St. George's third All-ACC selection as the Mechanicsville, Va., native was an All-ACC Second Team pick in 2019 and a member of the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2018.
These four Blue Devils helped their team to a historic season for the Duke softball team, compiling a 39-10 overall record and a 26-10 mark in ACC play. Duke, who earned the three seed in the 2021 ACC Tournament, will face No. 6 Louisville in the ACC Quarterfinals on Thursday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m.
