Carter II Selected by New York Jets in Fifth Round

DURHAM – Former Duke defensive back Michael Carter II was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
Carter II was the 154th overall pick in the draft, and the 10th selection in the fifth round.
Carter II, a 5-11, 190-pound Douglasville, Ga., product is Duke's second 2021 NFL Draft selection as Chris Rumph II went to the Los Angeles Chargers with the 118th overall pick. This marks the first time since 2015 that the Blue Devils have had two players drafted in the same year, and the 33rd time overall the program has had two or more draft selections. Carter II is Duke's first defensive back selected since Ross Cockrell went in the fourth round to the Buffalo Bills in 2014. Carter II is also the fourth Duke draft pick by the Jets and the first since Bob Grupp was a seventh round choice in 1977.Â

A third team All-ACC selection as a senior, Carter II was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award. The team captain saw action in 46 career games, 36 starts, and had 135 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four interceptions, 24 pass breakups, one caused fumble, one fumble recovery and one quarterback pressure.
In 2,581 career snaps, he tallied two-plus tackles in 30 games, including a career-high nine stops against Alabama in 2019. He was one of three defensive players in Duke history to start multiple bowl game victories (2017 Quick Lane & 2018 Walk-On's Independence), joining defensive end Victor Dimukeje and linebacker Ben Humphreys. Carter II's 24 career pass breakups placed him tied with Quinton McCracken (1988-91) for 10th all-time in program history.

A native of Douglasville, Ga., Carter II started all 11 games as a senior, recording 41 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions and eight pass breakups. He finished tied for ninth in the ACC in passes defended with 10 and earned a season-best eight tackles against Charlotte. Carter II accumulated three-plus tackles six times and registered two interceptions in back-to-back contests against North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
Carter II is the seventh NFL Draft pick to have played at Duke under head coach David Cutcliffe.
