AUGUSTA, Ga. – Gina Kim and
Erica Shepherd of the Duke women's golf program concluded a very special week in Augusta, Ga., at the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) as the Blue Devils competed in the final round of the event at the Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday.
Kim turned in a final round of 77 on her way to placing tied for 13th with a 222, while Shepherd shot 74 and finished in a tie for 16th with a 224.
A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim entered the final round only two strokes off the lead, but struggled on the front nine shooting a five-over, 41. Kim was solid on the back nine with five pars, birdies on No. 11 and No. 17 and two bogeys to shoot even-par. Her birdie on the par-4, 17th was one of the tournament highlights of the day as Kim chipped in from the bunker, when her ball bounced in front of the pin, hit the pin and then fell into the hole. Kim hit 13 greens, eight fairways and had 35 putts on the day.
"Yeah, it's so special to even be a part of it, even though my score today wasn't great at all, I'm very happy with just even getting the opportunity to play and that means a lot to me," said Kim. "It's just such a special place to be, and for Chairman Ridley to give us an opportunity to get out here and just to play and have fun, I think that's really a wonderful experience for all of us."
Seeing action in her second straight final round of the ANWA, Shepherd opened her day with five straight pars. After a three-putt bogey on No. 5, she rolled in a six-footer for birdie on the eighth hole to return to even for the day. Shepherd suffered bogeys on No. 11 and No. 14 to move to 2-over. She added her second birdie of the day on the 17th as she sank a five-foot putt, but settled for a bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 74. Shepherd hit nine fairways, 14 greens and rolled 38 putts.
"It is absolutely heaven on earth," said Shepherd. "The first three greens I was actually having to snap myself out of thinking this is a dream. The weather was a little cold this morning and somehow when we tee off, it's just perfect, like not even cold. Sun is out. Beautiful day. So, when you're out here, it's just hard to think that it's real. And the fact that it is, and I am getting to compete at Augusta, it's really special."
In 2019, Shepherd shot a 75 in her first round at Augusta National and finished tied for 21st, marking an improvement in both of those numbers.
Tsubasa Kajitani and Emilia Migliaccio finished at one-over-par, 217, and went to a playoff where Kajitani made a par on No. 18 to win the 2021 crown.
