DURHAM – Duke men's golf freshman
Ian Siebers overcame tough scoring conditions and finished as one of three medalists at a local qualifier for the 2021 U.S. Open on Tuesday at the Duke University GC in Durham.
Siebers shot 1-under 71 on the Blue Devils' home course and was one of five golfers in the field of 78 to advance out of the local qualifying stage in the quest to play in the 121
st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif., June 17-20.
Those players who advance out of the 110 local qualifying sites will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes at nine sites across the country in late May and early June.
Siebers, a freshman from Bellevue, Wash., joined Korn Ferry Tour player Ryan Sullivan and pro golfer Zane Lewis atop the leaderboard at 1-under. Two others -- Ryan Cole and Ben Griffin, who each have played on the PGA's Latinoamerica Tour -- shot an even-par 72 and survived a four-way playoff for the final two qualifying spots.
"It feels good to shoot well today with the course playing as difficult as it did," said Siebers. "My mindset going in was just to hit a bunch of good shots and see if my score would end up low enough to qualify, and I think that mindset helped me stay relaxed throughout the day. The way I was able to battle back at the end does a lot for my confidence going forward as well, and I'm excited to see what I can do in the near future."
The Duke freshman, who was fresh off a top 10 finish at the ACC Championship, found himself 3-over through five holes, but rattled off birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth holes to turn at even par 36. Continuing to battle the windy conditions and Duke's slick greens, Siebers played steady on the back nine with eight pars and the lone birdie on the par-5 11th to get into red figures.
Duke senior
Evan Katz finished a stroke shy of making the playoff as he shot a 1-over 73. Senior
Qi wen Wong carded a 6-over 78 as did freshman
Jimmy Zheng, while junior
Quinn Riley and graduate student
Steve DiLisio each posted a 79.
