DURHAM, N.C. – For the first time since 2002, a Duke field hockey player was named the ACC Freshman of the Year as
Darcy Bourne earned the award in a vote by the league's head coaches. Additionally, Bourne and graduate student
Eva Nunnink picked up All-ACC First Team recognition, as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon.
The last Blue Devil to garner the ACC's Freshman of the Year honor was Katie Grant in 2002.
Bourne started all 16 games during her rookie campaign in which she led the Blue Devils with eight goals, 17 points and 46 shots. The Esher, England, native went on a four-game goal streak in which she tallied five of her eight goals. Following a two-goal performance at Virginia on March 5, Bourne was named the ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week. She finished fourth in the league in shots and goals and seventh in points.

Joining Bourne on the first team was Nunnink, who also played her first season in a Duke uniform. A stellar defender and offensive threat, Nunnink tallied eight points on three goals and two assists. The Eindhoven, Netherlands, native finished fifth in the league in shots (43) and sixth in shots per game (2.69).
Duke concluded its 2020-21 campaign with a 4-12 overall record and ranked No. 15 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.
The league's head coaches voted on the 2020-21 All-ACC Field Hockey Team and season honors. Due to ties in voting, there were two 12-member teams along with Offensive, Defensive, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards.
