AUGUSTA, Ga. – A trio of Duke women's golfers –
Jaravee Boonchant,
Gina Kim and
Erica Shepherd – were treated to one of the most special days of the year Friday as the Blue Devils had the privilege to play a round of golf at the famed Augusta National Golf Club ahead of the final round of the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA).
"Obviously, it's Augusta National so pretty amazing," said Kim on playing Augusta National. "Just a little chilly for my preference but no, it was really amazing. I had a lot of fun."
All 81 participants of the ANWA played a practice round at the home of the Masters Tournament on Friday. On Saturday, the top 30 golfers, including Kim and Shepherd, will compete in the final round Saturday, April 3, which will be broadcast live on NBC from 12-3 p.m.
Shepherd will tee off on Saturday at 8:20 a.m., along with Brooke Riley, while Kim will tee off at 10 a.m., with Karen Fredgaard.
"Yeah, it's obviously super awesome to be back," said Shepherd. "It's cool because on the tee boxes I would be trying to figure out my line off the tee and I would see what I saw last year and like remember writing down the same exact line. So, it's cool how your brain works that way and obviously it was two years ago but I still have a very vivid memory of my time here so that's awesome."
Rose Zhang and Ingrid Lindblad are tied for the lead at 1-under-par, 143. Auston Kim and Olivia
Mehaffey are tied for third-place at even par. Kim, Karen Fredgaard and Tsubasa Kajitani are tied
for fifth-place, two strokes off the lead.
Thirteen players are within four strokes of the lead. Shepherd, along with eight other golfers, will be making their second appearance in Saturday's highly anticipated final round.
"You know, Augusta National is such an exclusive, amazing, special place," said Kim. "As soon as you get on to the property, there's just a special vibe to it and I think just being able to expand this place to women's golf is just really amazing. I put it as No. 1 in my season. So, it's an honor to be here."
It marks the second straight ANWA that Duke will have two golfers in the final 30 competing in the final round at the Augusta National Golf Club. In 2019, Boonchant and Shepherd made the cut and Boonchant posted a tied for 12th finish.
"Honestly just the atmosphere," said Shepherd on playing at Augusta National. "It's hard to describe because courses that you play, like you play other PGA TOUR stops and it's better on television than it is in person but out here, it's so much better in person. Just, yeah, it's crazy. So no one will ever understand that unless they are here so that's kind of what you try to explain to them."
