DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's tennis polished off another successful regular season, sending the program's seniors out with a win on senior day by defeating Wake Forest, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a good way to end our regular season," said Head Coach
Jamie Ashworth. "A good ACC win at home, a solid win. I thought our doubles, especially at No. 2 to get a win in 15 minutes kind of set the tone for everything. We talked this week about focusing on our body language and about being positive on the court with a lot of energy and I think we did that in the doubles."
Despite facing the highest ranked opponents on the court, the No. 11 duo of
Chloe Beck/
Karolina Berankova made quick work of the No. 25 team in the country, winning the opening doubles match 6-0. The duo controlled the net from the start and kept Brooke Killingsworth/Anna Brylin from generating any momentum.
On court one, the No. 7 team of
Meible Chi/
Margaryta Bilokin were able to secure an early break as well, taking a 3-1 advantage, before following it up with another break to lead 5-1. The No. 30 team of Carolyn Campana/Eliza Omirou were able to battle back with a break of their own, but Chi and Bilokin answered, taking the set 6-3 and giving the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead.
While uncompleted, the No. 56 tandem of
Kelly Chen/
Georgia Drummy were in a back-and-forth clash on court three. Wake Forest's team of Anna Campana/Peyton Pesavento took an early lead with a break to make it 3-1. Chen and Drummy buckled down to immediately break back and then hold serve to tie it at 3-3. Wake Forest responded with a break and hold of their own to take a 5-3 edge, but the Blue Devils added their second break of the match to make it 5-4 at conclusion of the doubles point.
Wake Forest responded in singles, taking the first match of the day as Casie Wooten defeated Duke's Berankova 6-3, 6-2. Berankova was able to bounce back from an early break to tie the opening set at 3-3, but Wooten held on to take the match.
With the match tied at 1-1, the Blue Devils didn't stay tied for long, as Drummy earned a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Wake Forest's No. 49 Anna Campana. After trading service holds in the first two games, Drummy took control, picking up two breaks in the first set. Drummy won seven straight games in the match, going from up 3-2, to a 6-2, 4-0 lead, before closing out the match to make it 2-1 Duke.
Over on court three, Beck kept pace with Drummy, finishing off another victory just shortly after her teammate. Beck started off strong, earning a break of serve on her opponents first service opportunity to take a 2-0 lead. The Watkinsville, Ga., native's opponent, Anna Brylin, responded with three straight games of her own, before Beck got on a similar run as Drummy. Beck won eight straight games to take the first set and a 4-0 second set lead, before finishing off the victory 6-3, 6-4.
Wake Forest was buoyed by the play of their top singles player, No. 15 Carolyn Campana, who defeated Duke's No. 42 Chen 6-4, 7-5. The match featured 14 breaks of serve as both players battled for every point. The first four games of the first set featured service breaks, before both players tightened up on serve. The first set ultimately went Campana's way on one final break while up 5-4. In the second, Chen bounced back quickly, storming out to a 5-2 lead, but Campana responded to win the next five games and shave Wake Forest's deficit to 3-2.
For the 25th time in her collegiate career, Chi earned the clinching win for the Blue Devils, taking her match against Eliza Omirou, 6-1, 7-5. A 5-0 start paced another great day for the No. 39 ranked graduate student, who built a similar lead in the second set, taking a 5-2 lead. Omirou showed composure to stay in the match, closing the gap to a 5-5 score, before Chi added her sixth service break to give the Blue Devils the victory. Chi has now recorded 43 all-time ACC singles victories, extending her program record, while improving to 132-37 in her all-time singles mark, which is good for fifth on Duke's all-time wins list. She needs three more singles wins to move into a tie for fourth along with Julie Exum (135-41).
"I didn't really think about senior day until the flowers came out and I was like 'wow, it's finally here'", said Chi. "I didn't really think about senior day out there, I just tried to win my matches, go about every point and do my best."
As a bonus, Duke tacked on a fifth point as Bilokin earned a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over Brooke Killingsworth. Bilokin started quickly, picking up a service break to lead 3-1. Bilokin added another break to win the first set and held off a late charge by Killingsworth to win seven straight points in the second set tiebreaker.
The Blue Devils will now turn their attention to the ACC Championship in Rome, Ga., as they enter the event as the No. 5 seed. The Blue Devils will open action on Thursday, April 22 at 9 a.m. against the winner of No. 12 Louisville and No. 13 Boston College.
