ROME, Ga. – The fifth-seeded and 14th-ranked Duke women's tennis team collected a 4-0 victory over 12th-seeded Louisville Thursday morning at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
Duke improved to 15-5 on the season and will advance to face fourth-seeded and 13th-ranked Virginia (13-5) on Friday, April 23 at 9 a.m., in the quarterfinals. Â
The Blue Devils once again got off to a good start in doubles and would go on to take the crucial point to take a 1-0 lead. Â
On court two, Duke's ninth-ranked tandem of
Chloe Beck and
Karolina Berankova jumped out to a 4-0 lead and would go on to win, 6-3, over Chelsea Sawyer and Raven Neely. The victory for the Blue Devils moved them to 15-3 and marked the fifth straight win for Beck and Berankova.
Duke's 35th-ranked duo of
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy held a 2-1 lead at the beginning, but Louisville's Tatiana Simova and Dina Chaika responded by winning two straight points to go ahead, 3-2. Chen and Drummy came back to win four consecutive points to win the match, 6-3, and clinch the point for Duke. Â
When the doubles point was clinched, the Blue Devil team of seventh-ranked
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin were trailing, 4-5. Â
In singles action, 40th-ranked Beck set the tone early with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Neely at the No. 2 position to improve to 17-4 overall and 15-3 in dual match action. Â
Drummy was in a battle of top 100-ranked student-athletes on court one against 93rd-ranked Di Palma. A product of Dublin, Ireland, 35th-ranked Drummy also got off to a good start leading 3-0 early in the first set. She maintained that edge and went on to take it, 6-2. After falling behind 0-1 in the second set, Drummy came back to win the second set, 6-2, to improve to 6-0 on the year at the No. 1 slot. Overall, Drummy is now 16-4 on the season in singles action. Â
With Duke leading 3-0, senior
Hannah Zhao saw action at the No. 6 position on Thursday against Chaika. After dropping behind, 0-1 and 1-2 early, Zhao fought back to take a 3-2 lead and she would never trail the rest of the way. Zhao, who hails from San Diego, Calif., won the first set, 7-5, and then collected a 6-0 victory in the second to clinch the second round win for the Blue Devils. It marked the seventh time in her career she has clinched a win for Duke and the first time this season. Â
When the victory was clinched, the remainder of the matches went unfinished. Â
