DURHAM – Sophomore
Andrew Zhang won a three-set thriller in singles action to help No. 41 Duke clinch a 4-2 victory over Florida State on Friday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Â
With the win, Zhang shifts his season record to a team best 11-4, including a 9-4 mark in dual action. As a unit, the Blue Devils improve to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in ACC play. Florida State falls to 8-14 and 2-9, respectively.
Â
The Blue Devils claimed the doubles point to kick things off after wins by
Michael Heller and Zhang on court two and
Andrew Dale and
Faris Khan on court three. Heller and Zhang were the first to finish, earning a 6-3 victory. No. 69 Marcus Walters and Loris Pourroy of Florida State kept things interesting though after they defeated No. 12
Garrett Johns and
Sean Sculley, 6-4, on the main court to tie the doubles round up at 1-1. Fortunately, Dale and Khan outlasted Chase Wood and Andreja Petrovic following a 7-6 (2) tiebreak win to secure the doubles point.
Â
Florida State battled back to even the overall match at 1-1 when Pourroy beat No. 94 Johns on the top court 7-5, 6-4 in singles action. The Blue Devils would answer with back-to-back wins on court two and six after Sculley and Heller registered wins, respectively, to hand Duke the 3-1 edge. Sculley bested Richard Thongoana 6-3, 6-4 to claim his win before Heller topped Wood 6-4, 6-4.
Â
The Seminoles would not go away though, earning another victory on court four following Petrovic's victory over Dale 6-4, 7-6 (3) to cut the deficit to 3-2. Duke would not waver as Zhang calmly clinched the match a few minutes later following his three-set battle with Sebastian Arcila. The sophomore defeated Arcila 6-1 in the opening set but fell 6-2 in the second to force a decisive third frame. Zhang then rallied for a 6-4 victory to clinch the Blue Devils' 10th win of the year.
Â
Khan's match with Walters on court five went unfinished. Khan won the opening set 6-4 but Walters claimed the second 7-6 (4). Khan was leading 2-0 in the third when the match was halted.
Duke has a quick turnaround as it faces No. 43 Miami on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup at Ambler Tennis Stadium. Fans will be able to follow the action via live stats and live video.
