DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore goalkeeper
Ruthie Jones has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, while senior defender
Caitlin Cosme earned TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week Honorable Mention status coming off a 0-0 draw against No. 14 Vanderbilt on Sunday.
In the regular season finale and final home contest of 2020-21, the seventh-ranked Blue Devils held a talented Vanderbilt offense to zero goals, with Jones collecting two saves on the day. The Charlotte, N.C., native had a game-saving sequence in the fourth minute of overtime, as she caught a high-arching shot by Vanderbilt midfielder Madison Elwell and threw the ball back into play as she was falling behind her own goal line. It proved to be the Commodores' final scoring chance of the match, as Jones posted her 10th clean sheet of the season.
Her first save came in the 73rd minute, when she corralled a shot fired from 20 yards out by midfielder Alex Kerr. Jones owns a record of 9-5-3 in her sophomore campaign, and her eight shutout wins rank second in the ACC.
This marks the first career ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor for Jones. Combined with weekly recognitions earned by junior
Marykate McGuire (Offensive – Sept. 15), Cosme (Defensive – Oct. 13, March 9) and redshirt senior
Mia Gyau (Defensive – April 6), Duke's five awards are tied with Clemson for the most in the conference this season.
Cosme receives TopDrawerSoccer.com accolades for the fourth time this season, after logging 110 minutes of action and helping hold the Commodores to just two shots on target. A team captain from New Hyde Park, N.Y., Cosme also jumped into the offensive attack just as she has all season, recording a career-high five shots and three shots on goal. She sent two headers towards goal, both off of corner kicks, with the last coming as a final effort with six seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
Cosme has five goals with one assist this season and leads the team with 1,580 minutes.
Eight Blue Devils have earned a total of 12 weekly nods from TopDrawerSoccer.com this season.
