DURHAM, N.C. - With the 2021 collegiate fencing season in the books, a combined 13 Duke fencers garnered spots on the All-ACC Academic Men's and Women's Fencing Teams, as announced by the conference office Monday.Â
Â
Duke had the most selections of the four ACC fencing schools and the most in program history since fencing returned as a league-sponsored sport.
Â
Five Blue Devil men and eight women were selected. Seniors
Julia Gianneschi,
Maria Papadopoulos and
Brycen Rushing, juniors
Huda Aldadah,
Alex Gorman and
Zoe Superville, sophomores
Sam Gruber,
Finn Hossfeld,
Jason Post and
Anneke Zegers and freshmen
Christina Ferrari,
Stephen Kim and
Lulu Tang were honored.Â
Â
This marks the fourth-consecutive year Gianneschi and Rushing have picked up the academic accolade while Aldadah, Papadopoulos and Superville were named to the list for the third time.Â
Â
Ferrari, Gorman, Hossfeld, Kim, Post, Rushing, Tang and Zegers qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championship and secured All-America accolades. Outside of the national stage, nine of the 13 notched medals at the ACC Championship in Chapel Hill in February.Â
Â
To be eligible for the All-ACC Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 grade point average for both the previous semester and as a cumulative average during their academic career as undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season also factored into the selection process.
Â
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
