DURHAM, N.C. – No. 7 Duke finished with 12 shots, including six on goal, but was unable to get one past the Vanderbilt goalkeepers as the Blue Devils and No. 14 Commodores played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at Koskinen Stadium.
Each side ramped up the offensive pressure during the two 10-minute overtime periods, highlighted by a breakaway opportunity for freshman
Olivia Migli in the 108th minute. Migli took a feed from senior
Tess Boade and found herself one-on-one with Vanderbilt goalkeeper Kate Devine, who came charging out and turned away Migli's left-footed strike.
The Blue Devils conclude the regular season with a 10-5-3 record, including a 4-4-2 mark in ACC play. They now turn their attention to the NCAA women's soccer tournament selection show, which is set for Monday, April 19 at 1 p.m. ET.
"[Vanderbilt is] the SEC champions, and a good team," head coach
Robbie Church said. "It was a good game, and for the most part, we really controlled the game on the front foot and played well. We didn't execute in the final third. It's a continuing theme, a little bit. We've got to continue to get better in that third. We've been good in different parts of the field. We built a great [chance] in overtime at the very end – great buildup, great play through and the goalkeeper made a great save."
Vanderbilt (9-5-1) had a number of late opportunities, first with a shot off the crossbar by Madison Ewell in the 72nd minute. The ball ricocheted to the feet of Leila Azari, who stood near the six-yard box with an open right side of the cage. She was not able to capitalize, however, sending the ball past the far left post. One minute later, Alex Kerr fired a shot from 20 yards out that was corralled by sophomore goalkeeper
Ruthie Jones.
In the fourth minute of the first overtime period, Elwell sent another high shot towards goal that caught Jones falling backwards. Just as she was crossing her own goal line, Jones threw the ball back into play, preventing the game-winner. Freshman
Katie Groff cleared the ball from danger as a pair of Vanderbilt forwards tried to jump on the rebound.
"It was what our goalkeeper group calls an improv save," Jones said. "At that point, the ball was coming at me and maybe I was coming from a little bit out of position. I caught the ball, I didn't want to fall into the goal with the ball in my hands, so I sort of improvised and did whatever I could to keep the ball on the other side of the line."
Groff made her first career start Sunday, playing a career-high 94 minutes and helping Duke record its 10th clean sheet of the season. Senior
Caitlin Cosme played a full 110 minutes and led Duke with three shots on goal, including a header off a Boade corner kick with six seconds remaining in the second overtime that was stopped by Devine.
Devine finished with five saves for the Commodores, after subbing in for starter Sarah Fuller at halftime. Jones collected two saves and moves to 9-5-3 on the year.
