DURHAM – On a windy, chilly afternoon in Durham, N.C., the 13th-ranked Duke women's tennis team battled with 12th-ranked NC State at Ambler Tennis Stadium, before dropping a heartbreaker, 4-3, to the Wolfpack in ACC action.
With the loss, Duke moves to 11-5, 6-4 in the ACC, while NC State improved to 14-3, 8-2. The defeat also snapped the Blue Devils' 54-match home winning streak.
Duke won the first game on two of the three doubles courts, but the Wolfpack would gain control of all three courts after that.
On court three, NC State's Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli dropped the first game, but went on to win six straight against 39th-ranked
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy to take the match, 6-1.
The sixth-ranked Blue Devil duo of
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin took court one against ninth-ranked Anna Rogers and Alana Smith. Duke took the first game and was tied, 2-2, after four, but NC State took command and won the match, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
On court two, Duke's 10th-ranked
Chloe Beck and
Karolina Berankova were down, 2-5, to fifth-ranked Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami when the point was clinched.
After missing the last two matches due to injury, 34th-ranked Beck was impressive on court three collecting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over 112th-ranked Reami to even the score, 1-1. With the win, Beck moved to 14-3 on the season and 7-1 in the ACC. The loss for Reami snapped a four-match win streak and was only her second ACC defeat of the season.
Chi continued her stellar play on court four jumping out to a 6-4 first set victory over Jaeda Daniel. After falling behind, 3-1, in the second set, Chi stormed back to win 6-3 to give Duke a 2-1 advantage. The win gave Chi 40 all-time ACC wins and is only one away from tying the Blue Devil career mark of 41 held by
Ellyse Hamlin. Chi, who hails from Weston, Fla., now owns a team-best 17-3 singles record on the year.
The Wolfpack evened the score, 2-2, with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win by Rencheli over 117th-ranked Bilokin on court five.
Making her return to singles play after missing three straight matches with an ankle injury, 77th-ranked Drummy went three sets with 29th-ranked Smith on court two, but was outlasted by a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-5 ledger to put the Wolfpack ahead once again, 3-2.
Berankova dropped the first set, 3-6, to Lexi Keberle, and fell behind, 3-4, in the second set, before coming back to earn a 7-5 second set win. A product of Prague, Czech Republic, Berankova once again fell behind in the third set, 1-3, but won five straight games to take the third set, 6-3, and notch her fourth career ACC victory.
It all came down to court one with Duke's 27th-ranked Chen against fifth-ranked Rogers. Chen collected a 7-6 (7-4) first set win, but Rogers responded with a 6-1 victory in the second set. Chen, who is from Cerritos, Calif., got off to a 5-2 lead in the third set, but Rogers would not quit and came back to clinch the win for NC State with a 7-5 victory.
Duke was originally scheduled to take on Wake Forest Saturday, April 3, but the match has been postponed. The Blue Devils will next travel to Boston College on April 9.
