DUKE VS. NC STATE
Friday night's battle between Duke and NC State will be the 37th installment of the ACC rivalry that dates back to the Blue Devil program's first year in 1988.
Duke holds a 23-10-3 all-time advantage against the Wolfpack, including a streak of 17 consecutive wins that began during head coach
Robbie Church's first season in 2001.
Friday's contest marks the first non-conference matchup in the series. Duke and NC State have faced off eight times in the month of September, 22 times in October and six times in November.
The last two meetings (Sept. 27, 2018; Sept. 22, 2019) have each resulted in a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
NC State has opened the spring with a 4-1-1 record, after not competing during the 2020 fall season due to a depleted roster as an indirect impact of COVID-19.
The Wolpack shot out to a 3-0 start in February, including a 2-1 overtime victory over UNCW. NC State was dealt its first loss in its most recent game, a 1-0 double-overtime setback against Wake Forest.
Sophomore Leyah Hall-Robinson paces the Wolfpack offense with two goals and five points this spring. Freshman goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta has started all six games in net, recording 10 saves and two shutout wins.
DUKE AWAY FROM HOME
The Blue Devils have gone 5-3-0 when playing on the road this season, including victories in two of their last three road matches.
Of the five road wins, Duke has shut out its opponent in three -- 1-0 at Boston College (Oct. 15), 4-0 at Syracuse (Oct. 18) and 3-0 at UNCW (March 6).
The five victories away from home are the most by the Blue Devils since the 2017 season. Duke holds a 12-4-1 all-time ledger when playing NC State in Raleigh.
LAST TIME OUT: WEST VIRGINIA 3, DUKE 2
The No. 5 Blue Devils suffered their first setback of the spring season in a top-10 road contest, falling to No. 7 West Virginia, 3-2, in Morgantown on Saturday, March 27.
Duke found itself in an early hole, as the Mountaineers netted two goals in the opening 17 minutes. The Blue Devils responded at the 42:20 mark, as sophomore
Sophie Jones scored her second goal in her last two games off an assist from freshman
Emily Royson to cut the deficit to one before halftime.
West Virginia quickly regained the two-goal advantage early in the second half, but Duke once again answered, this time with a header goal from senior
Caitlin Cosme with 37 minutes remaining.
Both teams battled down the stretch in a physical, hard-fought affair, but the Blue Devils were unable to find the late equalizer.
Sophomore
Ruthie Jones made three saves in goal for Duke.
