INSIDE THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Duke vs. UConn: 0-0
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Leading the Huskies is former Duke assistant coach Laura Valentino, who's put together a 22-12 career record the past two seasons. Carrying a 5-5 record into the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, UConn opened the tournament with a 7-3 victory over Elon before balling to the Tar Heels in eight innings, 3-1. The Huskies fell to No. 17 South Carolina, 7-6, in eight innings and will finish the Classic with a 10 a.m. game on Sunday before driving across town to play the Blue Devils.
Offensively, senior Reese Guevarra leads Valentino's program with a .327 batting average and 16 hits. Freshman Payton Kinney and Meghan O'Neil have split time in the circle, throwing 56 and 35.2 innings, respectively. The duo combines for a 2.98 ERA with 62 strikeouts.
WALTERS RECORDS PROGRAM'S FIRST NO-HITTER
Following an eight-run inning in the fifth, junior Shelby Walters recorded the first no-hitter in program history with an 8-0 run-rule shutout over NC Central on Thursday night. With solid defense behind her, Walters hurled five complete innings in which she tallied three strikeouts and only allowed one baserunner, retiring 14 of 15 batters faced.
With the victory, Walters improved to 6-0 on the season and continues to lead the conference with a 0.42 ERA and .129 opposing batting average.
MIDWEEK RECAP
Duke notched back-to-back midweek victories, including a 5-3 win in eight innings at Charlotte on Wednesday and an 8-0 five-inning feat against NC Central on Thursday.
Senior Rachel Crabtree scored the game-winning run against Charlotte with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the eighth inning and the Blue Devils used their sixth double of the contest to plate the final run of the game (5-3). Entering in the seventh, Peyton St. George picked up her fifth win of the season as the senior struck out five of six batters faced.
The Blue Devils used six hits to bring in eight runs to defeat the Eagles in run-rule fashion. Junior Kyla Morris and sophomore Kamryn Jackson both went 2-for-2 with one double each while senior Sydney Bolan hit a two-run home run to end the contest early (8-0).
