DURHAM, N.C. – With a walk-off home run from senior
Sydney Bolan to cap off the night, junior
Shelby Walters recorded the program's first no-hitter as No. 14 Duke defeated NC Central, 8-0, in five innings on Thursday night at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Â
The Blue Devils improve to 14-1 in the 2021 campaign, extending their win streak to eight games, while the Eagles move to 0-10.
Â
With the five-inning win, Walters permanently inked her name in the record book as the first Blue Devil to register a no-hitter. The Georgia native hurled a complete game with three strikeouts, only allowing one baserunner who was hit by a pitch, while notching her sixth win of the year (6-0).
Â
"I really didn't even know what was going on and then after the fifth inning I was like 'oh ok cool, we're scoring runs' and then the game was over," Walters said. "Then they told me I pitched a no-hitter and I said 'OH!' It's an amazing feeling and I'm so glad that we were playing defense and hitting."
Â
Scoreless through five innings, Duke garnered four of its eight hits in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory in run-rule fashion. Juniors
Kyla Morris and
Deja Davis hit back-to-back singles, followed by freshman
Francesca Frelick who brought in Duke's first run on an infield single to second (1-0). Looking to squeeze in a run, senior
Rachel Crabtree reached on a fielder's choice bunt as the run was safe at home plate (2-0).
Â
Executing the same strategy in the next at-bat as junior
Kristina Foreman scored Frelick on a fielder's choice bunt (3-0). Senior
Jameson Kavel reached on a hit to first base and sophomore
Kamryn Jackson doubled to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error while three runs crossed the plate to put Duke ahead 6-0.
Â
Bolan stepped into the box to pinch hit and launched her second walk-off hit in a Duke uniform, this time in home run fashion with a two-run shot to right field (8-0).
Â
"I was just really excited to get up there and Coach [
Marissa Young] said to me before my at-bat that I don't have to hit – I get to hit," Bolan said. "It put me in the right mindset and it was awesome to be able to end it when we did!"
