AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 2021 Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) opened Wednesday with three members of the Duke women's golf program participating –
Jaravee Boonchant,
Gina Kim and
Erica Shepherd. All three Blue Devils went off in the morning and finished their rounds, but the tournament was suspended at 4:32 p.m., due to inclement weather and did not resume at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
Shepherd carded a 73 in round one and is tied for 15th, while Kim signed for a 74 and is tied for 24th. A total of 29 golfers still have holes remaining in round one. The first round will resume at 7:45 a.m., Thursday simultaneously with the second round.
Only six golfers are currently under par with Katherine Smith holding the lead at four-under-par through 11 holes.
Shepherd opened the morning with bogeys on two out of her first four holes, but turned it around with back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6. On the 408-yard, par-4 fifth, she stuck her approach to seven feet and drained the birdie, while she rolled in a six-footer for birdie on the sixth to get back to even for the day.
A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd went bogey, par and birdie over her final three holes on the front nine. She would drop to two-over-par with bogeys on No. 13 and No. 16, before hitting the par-5 18th green in two and two-putted for birdie to close her round with a one-over, 73. Shepherd hit all 14 fairways, while hitting 11 greens and rolling 30 putts.
Looking to make the cut in 2021 after missing the final day two years ago, Kim turned in a two-over-par, 74, and is tied for 24th. She began her day with two pars and then collected her first birdie of the morning on the 486-yard, par-5 third hole to move to one-under-par. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., remained one-under through seven holes, before suffering a double-bogey on the 177-yard, par three eighth.
Kim came back with another birdie on No. 9 and closed the day with seven pars and two bogeys on her way to finishing with a 74.
Boonchant, a senior out of Bangkok, Thailand, struggled Wednesday in the opening round with a seven-over, 79, and is tied for 68th. She was limited to only one birdie on the par-3 eighth hole.
On Thursday in the second round, Boonchant will open play at 7:56 a.m., while Kim will tee off at 8:07 a.m., followed by Shepherd at 9:24 a.m.
Follow the conclusion of the second round, the top 30 golfers will advance to play the final round Saturday, April 3 at Augusta National Golf Club.
