DURHAM – Duke freshman striker Thorleifur Ulfarsson continues to collect weekly accolades as Top Drawer Soccer named him to its Men's Division I Team of the Week following his hat trick at Virginia. Ulfarsson also was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and the College Soccer News National Player of the Week.
Ulfarsson registered all three of Duke's goals as the Blue Devils opened a 3-0 lead on the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va. It's the first hat trick by a Blue Devil since Zach Mathers had one against NC State in 2015. Joining the Blue Devils in January from Iceland, Ulfarsson has four goals in the past two games and sits atop Duke's points list with nine despite playing only seven games.
In addition to being the first Blue Devil since 2015 to register three goals in a game, Ulfarsson is one of 13 players nationally to have a hat trick this season. He is the third from the ACC to achieve the feat.
Ulfarsson's two first-half goals helped give the Blue Devils a comfortable lead at the break, just the second time this season Duke has led after 45 minutes. He seemingly iced the victory in the 68th minute, putting a rebound in the back of the net.
All three of Ulfarsson's goals came in different manners. The first resulted after he pressured the Virginia defender into a mistake and finished a one-on-one against the Cavalier goalkeeper. The second was a fantastic free kick strike around the wall and into the left upper ninety while the third was being in the right position in the penalty box.
Duke is 4-9-2 overall and 4-5 against ACC foes. The Blue Devils play their final regular-season road contest at NC State this Saturday, April 3. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
