DURHAM – The eight-ranked Duke women's tennis team returned home to Ambler Tennis Stadium Monday morning and collected a 6-1 victory over Notre Dame in ACC action.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 11-4, 6-3 in the ACC, while Notre Dame dropped to 9-11, 3-9. Duke also collected its 54th consecutive home victory, which continues to lead all Power Five Conference teams.
"It was not easy with our schedule and coming out on a Monday morning at 10 a.m., is highly unusual for us," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "I thought we did a good job getting back late Saturday night and then kind of a quick turnaround with an early practice yesterday. We came out here ready to play. We are still manufacturing doubles lineups here, but I thought we did well with what we put on the court today."
On court three, the Blue Devil tandem of
Kelly Chen and
Ema Lazic got off to a hot start against Yashna Yellayi and Julia Andreach and never looked back, posting a 6-0 victory. Chen closed it off in impressive fashion with an ace to get off the court quickly. Chen and Lazic improved to 2-0 on the season together.
"I was great," said Lazic. "I loved competing and playing next to my teammates. The support is awesome. I just love playing. I just tried to be really energetic, positive, play my game and support my teammates as much as possible. I know they would support me as well. It was just great to be out there competing and fighting with them all."
Duke was able to clinch the crucial doubles point on court two as
Georgia Drummy and
Karolina Berankova teamed together for only the second time this season to collect a 6-3 win over 11th-ranked Ally Bojczuk and Julia Lilien. Drummy and Berankova jumped out to a 1-0 lead and then led 5-2, before closing the match out.
When the doubles point was clinched, Duke's fifth-ranked duo of
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin were tied, 4-4, on court one against 12th-ranked Cameron Corse and Page Freeman (ND).
Dating back to last season, the Blue Devils have won 17 out of the last 19 doubles points in dual matches.
Duke got off to a hot start in singles play winning the first set in all six matches.
Berankova, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, stepped on court four for the second straight match and faced Lilien. The Blue Devil sophomore took a 2-1 lead, but fell behind 3-4 midway through the first set. Berankova finished strong winning three straight games to take the first set, 6-4. She didn't lose another game, claiming the second set, 6-0, on her way to notching her third ACC win of the season and put the Blue Devils ahead, 2-0.
Seeing dual match action for just the second time in her career, Lazic turned in a stellar display of tennis on court six for the Blue Devils. The London, United Kingdom, product took the first set, 6-0, against Maeve Koscielski. After falling behind, 0-2, in the second set, Lazic won six out of the next eight games to win her first career ACC dual match with a 6-3 second set victory.
"That was a great thing for her," said Ashworth regarding Lazic posting her first ACC win. "She has honestly put in the time and effort. It is not an easy position she has been in for four years, not knowing whether she would play or not. When it was her opportunity at Virginia this week, she did a great job and didn't get to finish her match. She came out today and kind of kept that going. She provided a real emotional lift for us today to. She was very real vocal on the court. Hats off to her and congrats to her for that effort."
Bilokin, who is from New Canaan, Conn., clinched the Duke win on court three with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bojcuk. The Duke junior dropped the first game in both sets, but never trailed the rest of the way in her match. Bilokin improved to 12-6 on the season and 4-4 in ACC action.
For the third straight match, Chi went up against a ranked opponent as she faced 74th-ranked Freeman on court No. 2. Chi looked great at the start, taking the first set, 6-1. She opened the second set winning the first game, but would go on to drop the second set, 3-6. Chi, who hails from Weston, Fla., finished strong with a 6-3 third set victory to get the win.
With the ACC victory, Chi now owns 39 ACC singles wins over her five-year career, which ranks second all-time on Duke's record charts. She is only two victories away from matching the Duke record of 41 held by
Ellyse Hamlin. Dating back to the 2018-19 campaign, Chi has won 15 out of her last 17 ACC dual match singles contests. Chi's win was also her 38th win of her career against a ranked opponent.
Chen registered a three-set victory over Corse, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) on court one for the Blue Devils. Corse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set, but Chen battled back to take her first lead, 6-5, and eventually won the first set, 7-5. Corse came back in the second to win, 6-2, but Chen held strong in the third set tiebreaker winning 10-8.
Zhao was in a tight battle on court six versus Andreach, as she fell behind, 1-4, in the first set, before storming back to take the first, 7-6 (7-5). Andreach came back in the second to win, 6-0, forcing the match to a tiebreaker. Zhao, from San Diego, Calif., went ahead, 5-2, but Andreach came back to win seven straight points to lead, 9-5. Zhao responded by cutting the lead to 9-7, but eventually fell 10-7.
Duke's 20th-ranked
Chloe Beck missed her second straight match with an injury, while Drummy saw action in doubles after missing the last two matches with an injury.
The Blue Devils will remain at home this week as Duke will next host NC State Thursday, April 1 at 4 p.m., at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
