DURHAM – Duke rookie forward Thorleifur Ulfarsson has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and the College Soccer News National Player of the Week following his hat trick in the Blue Devils' 3-1 road victory at Virginia Sunday afternoon. This is the first ACC and College Soccer News player of the week award for the Blue Devils this season.
Ulfarsson registered all three of Duke's goals as the Blue Devils opened a 3-0 lead on the Cavaliers in Charlottesville. It is the first hat trick by a Blue Devil since Zach Mathers had one against NC State in 2015. Joining the Blue Devils in January from Iceland, Ulfarsson has four goals in the past two games and sits atop Duke's points list with nine despite playing only seven games.
Ulfarsson opened scoring for Duke in the 11th minute by outrunning a Virginia defender on a 50-50 ball. The long ball came from Peter Stroud and bounced and Ulfarsson's pressure kept the Cavalier center back from being able to play the ball back to the goalie and Ulfarsson took advantage and beat the keeper one-on-one.
Twenty minutes later, Duke's pressure in midfield paid off as Ulfarsson took a ball poked away by Santa Ihara and went straight to goal and drew a foul just outside the penalty box. On the ensuing free kick, he gave the Virginia goalkeeper no chance, curling his shot around the wall and into the left upper 90.
Ulfarsson and the Blue Devils put the game out of reach in the 68th minute when Ulfarsson was the beneficiary of a rebound and he knocked it in from six yards out for the hat trick.
A starter in six of seven games, Ulfarsson has four goals and an assist this season for nine points. The Blue Devils return to action April 3 at NC State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
