DURHAM – The Duke women's tennis team will hit the road this week for a key ACC match as the eighth-ranked Blue Devils will travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face 15th-ranked Virginia (11-2, 7-1 ACC) on Saturday, March 27 at 1 p.m., at the Virginia Tennis Complex at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
THE SERIES WITH VIRGINIA
Duke and Virginia will meet for the 70th time in school history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 62-7. The Blue Devils are riding a four-match win streak in the series. Duke owns a 23-3 all-time record in matches played in Charlottesville, Va.
VIRGINIA IN THE RANKINGS
As a team, Virginia currently ranks 15th nationally in the latest ITA rankings. The ITA also released updated singles rankings this week with the Cavaliers featuring two players ranked – Emma Navarro (6) and Natasha Subhash (18). In doubles, Navarro and Rosie Johanson are No. 21, while Sofia Munera and Subhash are No. 34 and Vivian Glozman and Amber Odell are No. 41.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME
The last meeting between the Blue Devils and Cavaliers came in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on April 19, 2019, with Duke collecting a 4-2 victory. In the match, Duke dropped the doubles point, but singles wins by
Margaryta Bilokin,
Meible Chi,
Kelly Chen and
Maria Mateas clinched the victory for the Blue Devils.
IN THE ITA TEAM RANKINGS
The Blue Devils currently are No. 8 nationally heading into the match against Virginia. Over the last four seasons, Duke has been ranked in the top-10 in 47 of the last 51 ITA rankings.
DUKE IN THE INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Duke features four ranked singles student-athletes – Chen (17),
Chloe Beck (20),
Georgia Drummy (78) and Bilokin (87). The Blue Devils also feature four doubles on the national list – Bilokin/Chi at No. 5. Beck/
Karolina Berankova are No. 9, Beck/Chi are No. 26, while Chen/Drummy are No. 36.
CHI MOVING UP WINS LIST
A product of Weston, Fla., Chi currently features a 126-37 all-time singles mark, which is good for fifth on Duke's all-time wins list. She needs nine more singles wins to move into a tie for fourth along with Julie Exum (135-41). Chi also features 37 career ACC singles wins, which ranks fourth. Her next victory will tie her for second along with
Kaitlyn McCarthy and
Reka Zsilinszka (38).
Chi owns a 216-76 combined singles and doubles wins over her Duke career, which ranks eighth on Duke's all-time charts. She will move into a tie for seventh along with Jessi Robinson (218-136) when she nets two more victories.
IN SINGLES ACTION
Four different Blue Devils have pushed past the double-digit singles wins ledger this season with Chi leading the way with a 14-3 record. She has collected an 11-2 dual match mark and a 6-1 ACC record. Dating back to the 2018-19 campaign, Chi has won 14 out of her last 15 ACC dual match singles contests.
Beck has collected a 13-3 singles mark and 6-1 ACC ledger. Drummy owns a 12-3 ledger, Bilokin has totaled an 11-5 record, Chen owns an 8-6 record and Berankova has a 7-7 mark.
DOUBLES ACTION
In doubles action, Beck and Berankova as well as Chen and Drummy owns a team-best 11 doubles wins on the year. Chen/Drummy have won 10 straight matches and owns an 11-2 record. The duo are 10-0 in dual match action and 4-0 in the ACC. Beck/Berankova have totaled an 11-3 record, including 8-2 in dual action.
The Blue Devils' duo of Bilokin and Chi have collected a 9-2 ledger, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. Since getting paired together last season, Bilokin/Chi have notched a 13-5 record, including a 7-2 ledger in conference action.
Dating back to last season, Duke has won 15 out of the last 17 doubles points in dual matches.
DRUMMY MISSES UNC MATCH
Duke redshirt sophomore
Georgia Drummy missed the North Carolina contest with an ankle injury. She is listed as day-to-day. Since transferring into the Blue Devils, Drummy has totaled a 12-3 singles mark and 5-1 ACC ledger. Drummy is also 12-3 in doubles action, including a 10-0 dual match record.
BECK REGISTERS TOP-10 WIN
On the road at top-ranked North Carolina on March 19, Beck collected an impressive singles win against sixth-ranked Cameron Morra. After dropping a close first set, 6-7, Beck responded by cruising to a 6-0 second set victory. In a back-and-forth super-tiebreaker, Beck came out on top winning, 12-10. It marked the highest singles win of her short career and second against a top-10 opponent. Beck owns a 21-3 dual match record and 8-1 ACC mark over her Duke career.
HOME WIN STREAK
The Blue Devils currently feature a 53-match home winning streak at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center and Ambler Tennis Stadium. The 53-match win streak is currently the longest among Power Five Conference teams with the next closest being North Carolina (42).
CHEN VERSUS RANKED
Over her four seasons with the Blue Devils, Chen has collected a 104-29 singles record. Of the 104 wins, 42 of them have come against ranked opponents.
MATCH-CLINCHING WINS
Chi clinched both of the Blue Devil wins against No. 5 Florida State and No. 30 Miami. She has now clinched 24 Duke wins over the years. Of the other Duke student-athletes on the 2021 roster, Chen has clinched 13, while Bilokin (9), Zhao (6) and Beck (4) have closed out Blue Devil wins over their career.
IN ACC ACTION
Duke has won 47 out of the last 52 ACC matches, including 29 straight home ACC wins.
WHAT IS NEXT
Duke will return home to host Notre Dame Monday, March 29 at 10 a.m. It will mark the first of three straight home contests as the Blue Devils will also host NC State (April 1) and Wake Forest (April 3).
COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS
Due to the impact of COVID-19, Duke University will begin its spring sport program seasons without spectators at home events. Contests played on Duke's campus will include essential game management personnel and broadcast media. Traditional parking lots used by fans on game day will be closed.
