CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Being down two ranked student-athletes on the road at 15th-ranked Virginia, the eighth-ranked Duke women's tennis team put up a great fight against the Cavaliers, but eventually fell, 4-2, at the Virginia Tennis Complex at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Blue Devils played their second straight match without 78th-ranked
Georgia Drummy and the first without 20th-ranked
Chloe Beck due to injuries. Duke dropped to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in ACC action, while Virginia improved to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in ACC play.
In doubles action, the Blue Devils had to adjust the normal tandems due to the injuries, but Duke did not miss a beat.
Duke's duo of
Meible Chi and
Hannah Zhao got off to a hot start on court one, leading 3-1 against the 21st-ranked duo of Emma Navarro and Rosie Johanson. After the Cavaliers tried to make a comeback by cutting the lead to 5-4, the Blue Devils were able to hold on for the 6-4 victory. Chi and Zhao moved to 5-1 all-time in doubles as a unit, but it marked the first time since the 2019-20 campaign the duo took the court together.
On court three, Duke's
Kelly Chen and
Ema Lazic went up against the 41st-ranked tandem of Vivian Glozman and Amber O'Dell, who entered the match with a 6-0 ledger. The Blue Devils built a 5-2 lead early and went on to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win. It marked the first time in four years at Duke that Chen and Lazic played doubles with each other.
When the doubles point was clinched, Duke's
Margaryta Bilokin and
Karolina Berankova were tied, 4-4, with 34th-ranked Natasha Subhas and Sofia Munera.
Dating back to last season, Duke has won 16 out of the last 18 doubles points in dual matches.
Virginia was able to even the score, 1-1, once singles started, as sixth-ranked Navarro was able to collect a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Duke's 17th-ranked Chen on court one. The Cavaliers then took their first lead of the match with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court four as Hibah Shaikh took down Berankova to go ahead 2-1.
Seeing action on court two for only the second time this season, Chi went up against 18th-ranked Subhash. Chi started strong going ahead, 3-0, but Subhash was able to even the score, 4-4. However, the two-time All-ACC selection was able to finish off the first set for Duke, 6-4. After falling behind, 0-1, in the second, Chi would build a 5-3 advantage, before closing out the win with a 6-4 second set victory.
Chi, who hails from Weston, Fla., collected her 37th all-time win against a ranked opponent and it marked the highest win against a ranked opponent since 11th-ranked Carla Touly in Nov. of 2018. The victory gave Chi 38 all-time ACC singles wins to move into a tie for second on Duke's record charts along with
Kaitlyn McCarthy and
Reka Zsilinszka.
With the match even at 2-2, inclement weather arrived in Charlottesville and forced the match to move indoors. After about a 40-minute delay, the contest resumed inside.
Zhao opened her match against O'Dell on court six in impressive fashion, winning the first set, 6-2, but O'Dell got hot in the second and third taking those sets, 6-4, 6-1 to give Virginia a 3-2 advantage. Zhao saw action in ACC play for just the second time this season.
Forced to play on court three for the second time this year, Bilokin battled tough in the first set, before falling, 3-6. After falling behind 1-3 in the second, she responded by winning five out of the next six games to take the second set over Johanson, 6-4. Bilokin was tight with Johanson in the third set, before moving indoors when Johanson pulled away to win the third, 6-2, and clinch the win for the Cavaliers.
Seeing action in her first dual match singles action of her four-year career, Lazic took the first set over Munera, 6-2. Lazic led 4-3 in the second set, before falling, 5-7, and the match was abandoned with her trailing 2-3, after Virginia clinched the win.
Duke will return home to host Notre Dame Monday, March 29 at 10 a.m. It will mark the first of three straight home matches for the Blue Devils at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
