COLUMBIA, S.C. – Through 10 holes of the final round of the Gamecock Intercollegiate, the 22nd-ranked Duke women's golf team along with Blue Devil sophomore
Erica Shepherd hold the lead heading into the Wednesday's action at the 6,297-yard, par 72 Columbia Country Club.
Due to possible inclement weather coming in overnight, the field went ahead and started round three to make sure the tournament could finish 54 holes. All teams completed at least eight holes of the final round, while Duke will resume play on holes No. 11 and No. 12 at 11:30 a.m., in the morning.
Up against a loaded field of ranked teams, Duke leads by six strokes, after shooting 282 and 291 over the first two rounds, while opening the final ledger at one-under-par through 10-11 holes. The Blue Devils are currently four-under-par for the tournament and leads host South Carolina (+2), Wake Forest (+3), Auburn (+11), Vanderbilt (+12), Mississippi State (+14), LSU (+15), Georgia (+18), Arkansas (+19) and Ole Miss/Baylor (+20).
The Gamecock Intercollegiate features eight teams ranked in the top 15 of the Golfweek national rankings.
Shepherd, who was tied for the lead after 18 holes and second overall after 36, currently sits in first place with an eight-under-par score through 46 holes. In the second round, she held a one-over-par ledger through nine holes with eight pars and one bogey but got scorching hot on the back, birding four out of the first five holes.
A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd stuck approach shots to nine feet, four feet, three feet and two feet for birdies and ended up shooting two-under-par, 70, in the second round. She continued that momentum into the afternoon by birding holes No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to get to four-under-par early. Shepherd currently is at three-under-par through 10 holes and eight-under for the tournament.
Lois Kaye Go of South Carolina is three shots behind Shepherd for the individual lead and is also through 10 holes.
Duke is the only team in the field with two golfers under par as freshman
Phoebe Brinker is two-under through 11 holes, which is tied for fifth. She shot 69 and 73 over the first two rounds and is even par for the third round with nine pars, one birdie and one bogey.
In the second round, Brinker was two-over through 14 holes, but closed with two birdies over her final four holes to finish with a 73. Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., nearly hit the green in two on the par five 15th and got up and down for birdie. She then hit her approach on No. 18 to four feet and rolled in the birdie. Brinker opened the third round with a 13-footer for birdie on hole No. 1, which is playing as the hardest hole of the tournament, allowing only 10 birdies.
With scores of 74 the first two rounds, sophomore
Megan Furtney is at five-over-par through 46 holes, which is tied for 34th. The St. Charles, Ill., product featured two birdies in the second round, both on par fives (7 & 15). Through 11 holes in the third round, Furtney is one-over with two birdies on the sixth and seventh holes.
Freshman
Anne Chen is tied for 46th through 46 holes with a seven-over-par ledger. She collected rounds of 76 and 74 over the first two days and is one-over through 10 holes in the third round. Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, closed her second round with a bogey-free stretch of eight holes, including a four-foot birdie on the 380-yard, par four first hole.
Coming off shooting a two-under, 70, in round one, junior
Gina Kim turned in a 79 in round two and is four-over through 10 holes of the final round. Kim, a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., rolled in four birdies in the second round.
Duke has collected 38 birdies in the tournament, which ranks second overall. Shepherd leads the field with a three-under-par (3.88) par four scoring and 13 birdies for the week.
