CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team traveled down the road to face top-ranked North Carolina on Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and dropped a 6-1 decision.
With the loss, Duke shifts to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels improve to 17-0, 7-0.
"Obviously, they are a good team," said Duke head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "Especially indoors they are a very good team. They hit the ball hard and the courts are fast. They play to their strengths very well. They knocked us back right at the start and we could never regain our footing. They do a really good job of taking it you. I think we couldn't withstand those early punches. Hats off to them. They did a good job and did what they do really well. It was a good match for them. It was a good learning experience for us. We are still growing. It is mid-March and I feel like we haven't played that much. I feel like our best tennis is still ahead of us. Hopefully, we can learn from this and prepare to have a good week and couple matches coming up."
The Blue Devils were without the services of redshirt sophomore standout
Georgia Drummy in Friday's match due to an ankle injury.
North Carolina was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead early by taking the doubles point. On court three, the team of Reilly Tran and Alle Sanford defeated Duke's tandem of
Kelly Chen and
Hannah Zhao, 6-2.
The Blue Devil duo of
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin took the first game on court one against Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra, but the Tar Heels were able to go on to clinch the doubles point with a 6-1 ledger.
Duke's
Chloe Beck and
Karolina Berankova were in a tight battle with Elizabeth Scotty and Makenna Jones on the second court that went unfinished with UNC leading, 4-3.
It marked only the second time Duke has dropped the doubles point this season.
Making her first ACC appearance of the 2021 campaign, Zhao dropped a 0-6, 0-6 decision on court six to Tran, which put the Tar Heels ahead, 2-0. North Carolina would get another point on the board as 49th-ranked Jones posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Duke's 44th-ranked Bilokin on the third court.
On court No. 4, Chi saw her nine-match winning streak come to an end as she dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to 120th-ranked Fiona Crawley as UNC clinched the win. Chi, a graduate student out of Weston, Fla., led 3-1 in the first set and 1-0 early in the second, but couldn't hold on.
Duke's 95th-ranked Berankova tried to rally in the second set after falling, 1-6, in the first, but eventually would fall to Anika Yarlagadda, 6-4, on court No. 5.
In a battle of top-10 ranked singles standouts, North Carolina's fourth-ranked Daavettila was able to take down Duke's eighth-ranked Chen, 6-3, 6-2, on court No. 1.
After trailing for most of the first set, including a 3-5 deficit, Beck won two straight games to even the score, 5-5. She trailed 5-6 as well, but responded with another win to send the first set to a tiebreaker against sixth-ranked Morra, but eventually fell, 7-4.
Beck, who hails from Watkinsville, Ga., came back in the second set and won an impressive, 6-0, set to send the match into a super-breaker. Beck jumped out to a 3-0 advantage early, but Morra came back to win five straight to go ahead, 5-4. After winning three out of the next four points, Beck led 7-6. Morra won two more points, but Beck once again came back to even the score, 8-8. Facing match point, Beck played a great point to even the score at 9-9. Beck would end up taking the tiebreaker, 12-10, for the victory. The win over sixth-ranked Morra was the highest singles win of her short career and second top-10 victory.
"Against Georgia Tech it was the same thing, I was the last match on," said Beck. "It was really tough for me to play after the team lost because I am playing for everyone else, not playing for myself. This match, I just wanted to show my toughness and show that even though we lost as a team I am going to still fight for Duke, my teammates and my friends."
Duke will be off until Saturday, March 27 when the Blue Devils travel to Virginia for a 1 p.m., match in Charlottesville.
