DURHAM, N.C. – The 14th-ranked Duke softball team opened the weekend series with a 5-3 win over Syracuse on Friday evening at the Duke Softball Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improved to 21-1 and 9-1 in league action while the Orange fell to 6-6 and 2-3. Junior
Shelby Walters recorded her eighth win (8-0) of the 2021 campaign as she fanned a season-high six batters.
Sophomore
Gisele Tapia registered the first Blue Devil hit of the day with a single through the right side, advancing junior
Caroline Jacobsen, who reached on a walk, to third. Following a passed ball, Jacobsen scored the first run of the game to give Duke a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Syracuse answered in the next frame, tying the contest as the Orange scored on an overthrow at first base (1-1).
In the third, senior
Jameson Kavel singled with a deep shot to the second baseman and Jacobsen doubled to right center, plating the go-ahead run to give Duke a 2-1 advantage.
Despite letting up two hits in the fourth, Walters racked up three strikeouts to leave two Orange runners on base. In the bottom half, sophomore
Kamryn Jackson drew a walk, stole second and was brought home on a base hit by junior
Deja Davis (3-1).
Following a scoreless fifth, Duke took advantage of two Syracuse errors in the sixth and scored its final two runs of the game (5-1). The Orange looked to rally late, using a pair of hits and errors to make it 5-3, but Walters ended the game with her sixth punchout of the night.
Duke and Syracuse are back at it tomorrow with a doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Duke Softball Stadium. Both games will be nationally televised on ACC Network.
