DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's golf program opened the month of March in impressive fashion as the 22nd-ranked Blue Devils carded a six-under-par, 282, and leads a stacked field at the Gamecock Intercollegiate, which is being played at the 6,297-yard, par 72 Columbia Country Club.
The Blue Devils were paced by three golfers under par as sophomore
Erica Shepherd and freshman
Phoebe Brinker each signed for a three-under-par, 69, while junior
Gina Kim shot a two-under, 70.
As a team, Duke turned in a six-under-par, 282, and lead LSU (286) by four strokes. Rounding out the top 10 includes South Carolina (287), Mississippi State (287), Auburn (287), Wake Forest (290), North Carolina (290), Vanderbilt (291), Ole Miss (294), Baylor (294) and Kentucky (298).
The Gamecock Intercollegiate features eight teams ranked in the top 15 of the Golfweek national rankings.
"Today was a lot of fun," said Duke women's golf head coach
Dan Brooks. "I saw solid golf, long game and short game. Our practice round was good - they studied the greens well and seemed to have the speed today."
Coming off a third-place ledger in the season opener, Shepherd backed that up with a career-best 18-hole score of three-under, 69, and is tied for first along with five other golfers. After opening the day with a par and bogey over her first two holes, Shepherd got hot with four birdies over her next 11 holes to move to three-under-par for the day. She chipped in on hole No. 3 from 20 yards away as she hit a flop 60-degree wedge that took one hop and went in the cup. She then stuck her approach on the 353-yard, par four fourth hole to a foot and birdied her second straight. Shepherd, who is a product of Greenwood, Ind., would move to two-under after draining a six-footer for birdie on the par five seventh.
On the 323-yard-par four 13th, Shepherd rolled in a four-footer for birdie to get to three-under-par, but missed the green on the par three 14th and suffered a bogey. She responded with another birdie on the par five 15th as she sank a four-footer. Shepherd's five birdies on the day matched a career best from her rookie campaign. For the day, she hit 12 fairways, 14 greens and had 29 putts.
Brinker, who hails from Wilmington, Del., opened her collegiate career last week and in just her second tournament posted her first round in the 60s as she featured six birdies and a three-under-par, 69, which has her tied for first.
After opening her first round with five straight pars, Brinker suffered a double-bogey on No. 6. She came back on a tear with six birdies over a span of nine holes to move to four-under-par for the day. Brinker got things started on the par-five seventh as she hit her second just short of the green and was able to tap in for birdie. She rolled in her second birdie on the 382-yard, par four ninth as she drained a right-to-left downhill putt from 20 feet. Brinker had solid approach shots on holes 11-13 and sank birdie putts from five to seven feet range for three straight red numbers. She birdied her third par five on No. 15 as she nearly hit the green in two and eventually rolled in a four-footer. Brinker hit 10 fairways, 14 greens and had a career-best 28 putts.
Kim's day of two-under-par, 70, was a season best and marked her 21st round of even or under par over her Blue Devil career. She kicked off her morning with two pars and then hit her 60-degree wedge from 76 yards to 12 feet and sank the birdie to move to one-under. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., would play the next 11 holes at two-over-par with nine pars and two bogeys. She closed strong though with her third collegiate eagle on the par five 15th as she hit her three-wood from 223 yards to the right side of the green in the rough. From 15 yards away, Kim chipped in for eagle to get back to one-under-par. After two pars, she rolled in a 27-foot putt for birdie on No. 18 to close her day with a 70, which is tied for seventh. Kim hit nine fairways, 13 greens and had 29 putts on the day.
Sophomore
Megan Furtney opened the morning with two bogeys over her first three holes, but settled down to play her final 15 at even par on her way to carding a season-best, 74. A native of St. Charles, Ill., Furtney posted her first birdie Monday on the 154-yard, par three fifth hole as she hit her eight-iron to 15 feet and sank the putt. On the par five 15th, she hit her 54-degree wedge to eight feet and notched her second birdie of the day, after eight straight pars. Furtney closed the day with a bogey on No. 18. She hit 11 greens and had 30 putts in the first round.
Seeing action in her second college tournament, freshman
Anne Chen notched a four-over-par, 76, in round one. The Sugar Land, Texas product collected 12 pars and one birdie on No. 13.
As a team, Duke featured a season-high 16 birdies and played the par fives at seven-under-par to pace the field. Brinker's six birdies on the day was also tied for first among the golfers.
The Blue Devils will open the second round Tuesday beginning at 9:00 a.m., with a shotgun start along with LSU and South Carolina. Due to potential inclement weather coming in, teams will attempt to play 36 holes Tuesday and if there are teams not able to finish, they will try to complete the third round Wednesday.
