Robertson's Career Day
Duke senior captain
Joe Robertson joined the elite list of 100-goal scorers with a career day against Air Force. With his third goal of the day, Robertson became the 21st Blue Devil to score at least 100 career goals. He went on to add four more in the game and tacked on three assists to finish his afternoon with a career-high seven goals and 10 points.
Robertson's 10 points were the most since
Justin Guterding also had 10 points against Air Force in 2018. The total is one point away from the Duke single-game record, while the seven goals were two off of the record nine established in 1996.
The Salem, Va., native has 104 goals and 33 assists to his name for 137 points, ranking 32nd in Duke history. He is four goals away from entering the top 15 on the Duke career goals list and 36 from the top 10.
Undefeated February
Duke played five games in a span of 21 days in February, going 5-0. The Blue Devils are undefeated in the month for the first time since 2014. Under head coach
John Danowski, Duke had gone unbeaten three times in February – 2-0 in 2007 and 2008 and 4-0 in 2014.
Not only do the Blue Devils have an unblemished record, they've done so in convincing fashion, sporting a 7.40 scoring margin to rank third in the ACC and seventh nationally. Duke is second among teams that have played more than two games, just behind North Carolina's margin of 8.80.
Rookies Join the Goals Club
Freshman midfielders
Charlie O'Connor and
Aidan Danenza notched their first career goals Saturday against Air Force. O'Connor broke the 1-1 tie and started a 10-1 Duke run. Danenza followed O'Connor's lead just 1:09 later. The duo joins five other players who scored their first goals as Blue Devils in 2021.
Tyler Carpenter Has the Scoop
Sophomore defenseman
Tyler Carpenter has been tremendous off the ground for Duke through five games. The native of Durham, N.C., has 24 ground balls in his five games, one more than he had in eight games as a rookie. He has picked up at least five in each of the past four games and most recently recorded six in the win over Air Force.
Carpenter dropped down to close defense this season after playing at LSM his freshman season where he also was a key member of the faceoff wing.
Sharing the Ball
Duke's offense is starting to jell and develop chemistry and the Blue Devils' assist numbers are proof. In the season opener against Denver, Duke dished out just four assists on 12 goals. In each ensuing game, the Blue Devils have assisted on at least 47 percent of their scores. Against Robert Morris, 11 of 16 goals had assists as did 10-of-the-17 versus Mercer. In an offensive clinic at Towson, 9-of-19 tallies had that extra pass and this past weekend against Air Force the percentage was a season-high .764 (13-of-17).
Sowers is the top assist man with 17, while midfielder
Nakeie Montgomery has six and rookie
Brennan O'Neill has five.
On Target
Duke's shot efficiency has been on display so far this season. The Blue Devils' sport the ACC's best shooting percentage (.391) and rank sixth nationally and fourth among teams that have played more than a single game. Duke has shot over 40 percent in three games, including a season-best .486 against Mercer.
Montgomery leads the Blue Devils at .600, while Sowers and Robertson are at .500. They both are among the top 25 nationally and rank second and fifth among league players, respectively.
Special Special Teams
That's not a typo – Duke's special teams have been special this season. This past weekend, the Blue Devils scored five man-up goals on four opportunities – they scored twice on a 3-minute penalty. Duke ranks 14th nationally and second in the ACC behind Notre Dame's efforts after a single game. Among teams that have played at least three games, the Blue Devils are fourth.
On the defensive side of the field, Duke held Air Force to just one goal on five chances. The Blue Devils are 16-of-22 (.727) on man down, second to Virginia in the ACC and 16th among Division I programs.
Tracking Sowers' Career Numbers
Duke's

In the past two games, the speedy attackman has five goals and 12 assists. He extended his scoring streak to 52 games and his points total to 329. He remains eighth in the NCAA records book 25 away from the top five.
With 198 assists in 52 games, Sowers needs 34 to break Pat Spencer's NCAA record of 231. His average of 3.81 per game currently ranks fourth in NCAA history.
