DURHAM, N.C. – On the second day of league action, No. 18 Duke split its contests on Saturday, picking up an 11-3 five-inning victory against Pittsburgh before falling short to Notre Dame, 5-3, at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Between the two games, the Blue Devils (6-1, 2-1) were led by senior
Sydney Bolan, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI, and while junior
Deja Davis recorded three hits in her seven at bats. Senior
Rachel Crabtree also had a solid day at the plate, hitting .500 with her first career triple.
Duke 11, Pitt 3
Despite trailing 3-1 after the second frame, Duke used a seven-run fourth inning to run-rule Pitt, 11-3, in five innings. The Blue Devils capitalized on six Panthers' errors, including three in the bottom of the first.
Crabtree tallied Duke's first hit of the day with a triple to right field before scoring on a throwing error in the next at bat to put the Blue Devils ahead, 1-0. Pitt responded in the top of the second, using a single and a three-run home run to take the lead (3-1).
In the bottom half, Bolan garnered her first double of the day with a shot to the wall in right center, but Duke was unable to bring her home. Junior
Shelby Walters relieved freshman
Claire Davidson in the third, retiring the side in order.
Crabtree notched her second hit of the afternoon with an infield single while juniors
Kristina Foreman and
Caroline Jacobsen reached on an error and fielder's choice, respectively. Duke plated two runs on a fielding error before Bolan knocked an RBI single through the right side, giving Duke the lead at 4-3.
Pittsburgh went down in order the fourth before the Blue Devils scored the final seven runs on six hits and one error. In the inning, Davis and Jacobsen singled while Foreman, Bolan and sophomore
Gisele Tapia all doubled. Graduate student
Raine Wilson also hit a two-run homer – her first home run of the 2021 season.
With the win, Walters improved to 2-0 in the circle after a three-inning appearance in which she retired all nine batters. Davidson, who made her second career start, threw two innings in which she picked up one strikeout.
Notre Dame 5, Duke 3
Senior
Peyton St. George earned the start in the circle and began the contest with back-to-back strikeouts swinging before shutting down the top of Notre Dame's lineup. Davis recorded Duke's first hit of the night game with an infield single.
The Fighting Irish tallied their first hit in the top of the second, but St. George picked up another two consecutive strikeouts as the inning ended on a double play with a punchout and a runner caught stealing by graduate student
Jazmine Moreno.
Duke opened the scoring in the second inning, using efficient baserunning to plate two runs on a stolen base and an overthrow into left field by the catcher (2-1). Notre Dame answered in the third, using an RBI single to plate a run before tying the game in the fourth (2-2) after a triple and double. Moreno ended the Irish's fourth frame with her second throwdown of the game.
Notre Dame pulled away in the top of the sixth, opening the frame with two straight hits as both runners scored on a two-run double down the left field line. The Irish would bring across its final run of the game on a single up the middle (5-2).
Putting their rally caps on, the Blue Devils drew four walks in the bottom of the seventh to bring a runner across the plate (5-3). With bases loaded and two outs, Foreman ripped a shot to left field, but the Irish were there to collect the last out of the contest.
St. George hurled 4.2 innings in which she racked up eight strikeouts while letting up two runs. Senior
Brianna Butler, who entered in relief in the fifth, was handed her first loss of the season (2-1) after 2.1 frames in which she allowed three runs.
Duke returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Notre Dame, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Duke Softball Stadium.
