The top-ranked Blue Devils moved to 3-0 last weekend with the win over Mercer. In a change from the first two games where the Blue Devils fell behind 5-1 in the first quarter, Duke used a fast start to beat the Bears.
Michael Sowers is the top scorer with 13 points, while both Nakeie Montgomery and Brennan O'Neill have eight points apiece. Eighteen different players have scored at least one goal and sophomore Dyson Williams is the top goal scorer with six. Just over half of Duke's goals have been assisted this season as Duke develops chemistry on the offensive end.
Towson enters the weekend with a 1-1 overall record after holding off a second-half surge from Saint Joseph's to earn the 8-7 victory. The Tigers lost to Virginia in the season opener, 20-11.
Brody McLean is the top scorer with six goals and three assists for nine points. Andrew Milani has four goals, including the 4th quarter winner against the Hawks. The Tigers are scoring 9.50 goals per game, but shooting just .260.
Defensively, Towson had tough opening game against a high-powered Virginia offense. The Tigers allowed just seven goals against Saint Joseph's. Garrett Zungailia leads the Tigers with four caused turnovers and 12 ground balls. In goal, Shane Brennan has played all but 3:47 and has a 13.77 goals against average and .460 save percentage. He is averaging 11.5 saves per game.
At the faceoff X, Towson has struggled, winning just 15-of-52 draws. Shane Santora has taken the majority of faceoffs, going 11-of-39 at the X.
Duke's Depth Proving to be Dangerous
A lot has been made of Duke's talented roster, especially on offense, leading up to the 2021 campaign. The Blue Devils have backed up the discussions as 18 different Blue Devils have at least one point this season. Three defensive players are a part of the scoring mix – Jake Caputo, Tyler Carpenter and Terry Lindsay – against Robert Morris, while five players notched their first points in a Duke uniform on the opening weekend.
In addition to the balanced scoring, Duke's options in goal proved to be instrumental to the team's success in the first two games. Three different goaltenders saw action in the two games with graduate student transfer Mike Adler earning the start against the Pioneers and Turner Uppgren the nod versus Robert Morris. The Blue Devils rank second in the ACC at 11.33 saves per game.
Adler played the first 16 minutes against Denver, allowing six goals, before Uppgren came off the bench to make 11 saves and earn the victory. It was a reversal of roles in the Robert Morris outing as Uppgren allowed five early goals to the Colonials. Adler got the call after 10 minutes and came in to make 11 saves in 45 minutes. Andrew Bonafede made two saves in the final 3:42 against Robert Morris.
Senior Nakeie Montgomery is having a strong start to the 2021 campaign, ranking second on the team in points with four goals and four assists.
The Dallas, Texas native can impact a game in a variety of ways. He most recently showed his incredible vision and dished out three high-level assists in the win over Mercer. That came on the heels of him scoring three goals and an assist in the fourth quarter to help Duke beat Robert Morris.
The eight points are the most for Montgomery in his first three games of a season. In 2020, Montgomery had six points as Duke started 2-1 and as a sophomore, he had three.
Sowers Climbing the Charts
Sowers continues to shine for the Blue Devils, registering four goals and two assists against Mercer. The six-point outing was his 37th game with at least five points, while his four goals marked his 25th career hat trick.
Riding a 50-game point streak, Sowers has 315 career points from 126 goals and 189 assists. He is one point shy of moving into the top 10 on the NCAA career scoring list and six points away from the eighth spot.
Speaking of the records book, Sowers needs 43 assists to break Pat Spencer's NCAA assists record of 231. His current average of 6.30 points per game ranks tied for third in the NCAA records book.
To put his productivity into perspective, only six players in this century averaged more than five points per game for their careers.
Naso Continues to Shine
Starting with the Robert Morris game, rookie Jake Naso has been Duke's top draw man. The St. Anthony's product has taken 83 percent (50-60) of the team's faceoffs in the past two games and has won 31 of them for a .620 win percentage.
Naso registered an assist versus Robert Morris while winning 19-of-28 draws and in the win over Mercer he scored his first career goal while winning 12-of-22 faceoffs. Mercer's draw man came into the game winning 83 percent of his restarts and left having won only 54 percent. Naso has 16 ground balls on the year and ranks 14th nationally with a .608 win percentage.
The Streaks Continue
The point streaks continued for Sowers and Dyson Williams Friday. Sowers has scored at least one point in all 50 of his collegiate games, dating back to his debut Feb. 18, 2017. Sowers has been held with a goal just four times, but has never had fewer than two points in a game – twice versus Yale.
Senior Joe Robertson returned to the field and pushed his streak to 30 games, dating back to March 24, 2018. Sowers and Robertson are two of 25 players sporting at least a 30-game point scoring streak.
With a hat trick against Mercer, Williams extended his games with at least one goal to 11 – every game in his young career.
