DURHAM – Duke men's soccer freshmen
Ruben Mesalles and
Shakur Mohammed earned All-Freshman honors from College Soccer News, as the publication announced on Monday.
Â
Mohammed was tabbed to the All-Freshman first team, while Mesalles was selected to the second team. The duo had previously been named to the ACC's All-Freshman Team on Nov. 10.
Â
Mohammed adds another honor to his highly decorated freshman campaign, after being named the ACC Freshman of the Year, second team All-ACC and third team All-South Region. A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Mohammed finished in a tie for second on the team in points with 13, tallying three goals and seven assists. Mohammed formed a dynamic pairing up top with sophomore striker
Thorleifur Ulfarsson, with five of his seven assists coming on Ulfarsson goals.
Â
Mesalles had a strong first season as a Blue Devil, in which the natural midfielder learned a new position and spent several games as a defender, while also maintaining duties as key corner kick taker. The Longboat, Fla., native scored two goals and had five assists for nine points over 19 games played, ranking fifth on the team in points. One of his two goals came in the second round of the NCAA Championship, as Mesalles tied the game with UCLA to help the Blue Devils advance to the third round.
