DURHAM – The Duke women's tennis team heads to Miami, Fla., this weekend for its final event of the fall at the Miami Fall Invite from Nov. 5-7, hosted by the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
Across the three-day event, the Blue Devils will compete as part of a five-team field that includes Kentucky, Columbia, Barry University, as well as host Miami.
Junior
Chloe Beck and seniors
Margaryta Bilokin, Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy are set to take the court for the Blue Devils in both singles and doubles competition.
Action kicks off Friday and Saturday morning at 9 a.m., while Sunday's slate of matches is set to begin at 8 a.m. Live stats will be available throughout the weekend via StatBroadcast.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils received a strong performance on day one of the ITA Fall Regionals from their doubles pairings who combined to go 3-1 in the opening round, with the tandems of
Karolina Berankova and Drummy, Chen and
Eliza Omirou and Beck and Bilokin each advancing to the round of 16. Drummy and Berankova cruised to an 8-0 victory over Jade Houston/Hannah Gaines of North Carolina Central, Chen and Omirou defeated Davidson's Daniela Porges/Linden Patterson, 8-2, then Beck and Bilokin closed out the day with a win against Ellie Schulson/Sara Snyder, beating the Furman pair, 8-2.
Chen and Omirou immediately got Duke off to a great start on day two, posting an 8-1 win over Charlotte's Emma Wilkins/Lucie Petruzelova. Berankova and Drummy defeated Nanon Delsol /Teodora Ristic of Gardner-Webb, 8-3, before Bilokin and Beck rallied to secure a win over Elon's Lizette Reding/Sibel Tanik.
Ellie Coleman and
Emma Jackson cruised to an 8-1 win over Davidson's Elizabeth Truluck/Mira Gladstone in the consolation draw, which gave the Blue Devils doubles teams a sweep for the day.
Coleman started the Blue Devils off strong in singles action as she defeated Lily Woods from Wofford 6-1, 6-2. Beck, Chen and Jackson followed suit and posted straight set wins of their own. Beck beat Charleston Southern's Luiza Fullana 6-0 and 6-2, Chen grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sara Snyder from Furman and Jackson defeated UNC's Ruxi Schech 6-2, 6-0. Bilokin also picked up a win after a three-set match against Coastal Carolina's Victoire de Samucewicz and Omirou recorded the fourth straight-set victory for Duke with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Furman's Ellie Schulson.
Five Blue Devils clinched spots in the quarterfinal round following strong performances in the round of 16. Beck beat UNC's Lucia Quiterio 6-2, 6-3. Bilokin, Chen and Coleman were each pitted against individuals from ACC foe Clemson. Coleman locked up her second singles win of the day after rallying from a set down and going on to beat Ali DeSpain 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Chen bested Daniela Medvedeva 6-2, 6-1, while Bilokin battled past Eleni Louka 7-5, 6-2. Jackson locked up Duke's fifth spot in the quarterfinals with a tightly contested 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Kacie Harvey from UNC.
Berankova and Drummy along with Beck and Bilokin punched their respective tickets to the finals of the A1 and A2 doubles draws to lead a successful third day at the ITA Fall Regional Championships. Chen and Jackson also advanced to the semifinals in the main draw of the A1 singles bracket after both posted three-set wins. Jackson bested Wake Forest's Casie Wooten 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Chen defeated Sophie Abrams from NC State 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-1.
Berankova and Drummy and Chen and Omirou each posted 8-6 wins in their respective quarterfinals. Berankova and Drummy defeated NC State's Jaeda Daniel/Abigail Rencheli and Chen and Omirou beat the Wake Forest duo of Wooten/Samantha Martinelli. Beck and Bilokin also earned a quarterfinal win over another Wolfpack duo, beating Amelia Rajecki/Sara Nayar, 8-4. In the semifinals later that day, Berankova and Drummy rallied for a thrilling tiebreaking win (1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8)), while Beck and Bilokin beat UNC's Alle Sanford/Reilly Tran in straight sets.
However, Duke's run at the 2021 ITA Regional Championships would come to an end in the singles semifinals and doubles finals the next day.
DUKE IN THE INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Duke features three ranked student-athletes in singles – Drummy (5), Chen (25), Beck (28). The Blue Devils also have three doubles teams on the national list – Beck/Berankova are No. 2, Bilokin/Omirou at No. 24, and Chen/Coleman at No. 49.
CHEN VERSUS RANKED
Now in her fifth season with the Blue Devils, Chen has collected a 115-39 singles record. Of the 115 wins, 46 of them have come against ranked opponents. Chen's 115 career wins currently rank 12th on the Duke charts and she will move into a tie for ninth with Amanda Johnson, Karen Goldstein and Monica Mraz (117) with two more victories.
