DURHAM – The Duke softball program is set to face its final opponent of the 2021 fall ball slate, hosting North Carolina A&T on Friday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m., at Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils are now 8-0 and have extended their run differential this fall to 71-3, while limiting opponents to no more than one run a game. Duke has registered shutouts against South Carolina, East Carolina, Campbell (twice) and Elon this fall.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils ended their fall road schedule with another convincing victory, defeating Elon 15-0 in a ten-inning affair on Friday, Oct. 29. The win marked the third time this fall that the Blue Devils have scored 10 or more runs in a game.
The offense started quickly, as senior
Deja Davis hit a solo home run on the first at-bat of the day. Junior
Gisele Tapia hit another home run as part of a six-run first inning. Sophomores
Francesca Frelick and
Jala Wright had huge days at the plate, combining for seven RBI, including a bases-clearing double by Frelick in the seventh inning.
Wright was critical in the circle as well, starting the game with four shutout innings and five strikeouts. The Blue Devils got more of the same from sophomore
Lillie Walker and senior
Shelby Walters, who each threw three innings, while combining to add another four strikeouts. The trio limited the Phoenix to just three hits in total.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
After an historic 2021 season that saw the program's first ACC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance, the Blue Devils continue exhibition play this fall. Head coach
Marissa Young is back for her fifth season at the helm of the program, following a program-best 44-12 record last season.
Several members of the championship squad are back, including all four All-ACC honorees from a year ago. The first NFCA All-American in program history,
Deja Davis, is back for her senior year after hitting .389 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, seven triples and 14 stolen bases. Outfielder
Jameson Kavel is back as a graduate student, after earning All-ACC First Team honors following posting a .320 batting average, four home runs and 33 RBI over 56 games.
The decorated pitching duo of graduate student
Peyton St. George and senior
Shelby Walters is back to headline an experienced pitching staff. St. George was the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, All-ACC First Team honoree and pitched to a record of 18-8, with a 2.21 ERA over 158.2 innings, while striking out 199. Walters was equally effective, going 19-3 with a 1.28 ERA over 147.2 innings pitched, collecting 87 strikeouts.
MEET THE NEWCOMERS
The Blue Devils added eight new members to the team for the 2022 season. Seven freshmen; infielder
Jada Baker (Longwood, Fla.), pitcher/utility player
Kennedy Barron (Section, Ala.), infielder
Ana Gold (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), utility player
Mariah Headen (Greensboro, N.C.), utility player
Leah Jarnac (Safety Harbor, Fla.), catcher
Taylor Krapf (Oviedo, Fla.) and outfielder
Kelsey Zampa (Hartland, Mich.) have joined the team as part of the fourth-ranked 2021 signing class in the country per
Extra Innings Softball.
Also joining the team is sophomore pitcher
Jala Wright (Charlotte, N.C.), who comes home to her native North Carolina after her freshman season at Michigan State. Wright made 11 appearances and four starts in the circle as a rookie for the Spartans, pitching 25.0 innings and striking out 18 batters.
It's been a quick start for the newcomers, as Gold has three home runs this fall, Zampa hit a home run against Campbell and has RBI in back-to-back games, while Wright has started with 16 straight scoreless innings of starting and relief pitching.
