KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Duke freshman
Michelle Cooper has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy, as announced today by United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC).
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer and has been awarded annually since 1967.
A native of Clarkston, Mich., Cooper established herself as one of the nation's top offensive talents during her freshman campaign. The forward tied for second in goals (12) and fifth in points (29) among all freshmen nationally, while ranking in the top five in the ACC in each category. She was named the ACC Freshman of the Year – becoming the fourth Blue Devil to receive the honor – and earned a spot on the all-conference First Team. With two tallies in the first half of the Blue Devils' win over St. John's in the NCAA Championship Round of 16, Cooper surpassed Kelly Cobb (2011) for the most goals by a freshman in program history.
Cooper was held without a point just four times in 18 appearances. Some of her top performances came against ranked opponents, including her overtime game-winner versus No. 15 Notre Dame on Oct. 21. Cooper also got Duke on the board in the first half against 10th-ranked Stanford, two weeks before she assisted on the winner at No. 2 North Carolina.
She becomes the sixth player in program history to be named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and the first since 2018 (
Kayla McCoy). Cooper is the only freshman listed among this year's 15 semifinalists.
Three finalists will be named for the award on Wednesday, Dec. 8 in conjunction with the Women's College Cup in Santa Clara, Calif. The 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 7, 2022 to formally announce this year's winners.
