KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Duke men's soccer coaching staff has been honored as the 2021 South Region Staff of the Year, as the United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday.

Tristan Wierbonski were one of eight Division I staffs to be selected to the exclusive list. Under their leadership, the Blue Devils went 14-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the ACC, good for a 10-win improvement from the year prior and finished as co-champions of the ACC Coastal Division. The Blue Devils were one of six teams to improve by 10 or more wins, joining Hofstra, Northeastern, Northern Illinois, Tulsa, and Villanova.

The Blue Devils went on to compete in their first ACC Tournament final since 2006 and reached the third round of the NCAA Championship.

Under the staff's leadership, sophomore
Thorleifur Ulfarsson was named the 2021 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, sophomore
Peter Stroud was named the 2021 ACC Midfielder of the Year and freshman
Shakur Mohammed was tabbed as the 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year.

Duke was the lone ACC staff honored, joining Hofstra, Georgetown, Missouri State, New Hampshire, Oregon State, Penn State and Saint Louis.

Each of the 60 (30 men's and 30 women's) staffs across NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA men's and women's soccer receiving Regional Staff of the Year honors will be recognized at the College Coaches Awards Ceremony at the United Soccer Coaches Convention on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022.

In addition, the Blue Devils staff has been placed on the ballot for United Soccer Coaches National Staff of the Year consideration.
