Last Time Out
- The Blue Devils won their 10th second round game in program history, defeating unseeded UCLA, 2-1, to advance to the third round of the NCAA Championship.
- Freshman Ruben Mesalles delivered the equalizing goal in the 87th minute, while sophomore Peter Stroud earned the game winning goal just 39 seconds later.
- Sophomores Lewis McGarvey and Nick Pariano each tallied assists in the win.
- The Blue Devils recorded their largest shot output since 2018, setting a new season high with 28 shots, versus six for the Bruins.
Tale of the Tape
- Saint Louis comes to Durham as the only remaining undefeated team in the field, with a record of 15-0-4 and an 8-0-0 mark in the A-10.
- The Billikens cruised to the third round following a 5-1 win over Long Island. Saint Louis was paced by John Klein, who scored two goals in the win.
- Saint Louis leads the nation in NCAA Championships (10) and all-time appearances (49).
- On offense, Simon Becher leads the way as one of the premier offensive players in the nation, with 13 goals and 35 points on the season. Klein is right behind him with 27 points.
- Head Coach Kevin Kalish is off to his best start with the Billikens in his fourth season with the program. Kalish has faced the Blue Devils once before while at the helm of SIU-Edwardsville's program.
Opponent History
- Duke and Saint Louis will meet for the fourth time, with the Blue Devils taking all three games in the all-time series.
- The Blue Devils last met 14 years ago, and the two teams have met once in the NCAA Championship, with a 4-3 win for the Blue Devils on Nov. 22, 1992, in Durham.
- That season, the Blue Devils advanced to the national semifinal.
What to Watch For
- The Blue Devils are playing in their sixth third round game in program history after the field expanded to 48 teams in 2001.Â
- The program is 32-25-2 all-time in the NCAA Championship, with three finals appearances and the 1986 NCAA title.
- Duke is 7-5-1 in the NCAA Championship under head coach John Kerr.
- Sophomore Thorleifur Ulfarsson ranks second in the nation outright in goals per game (0.93) and ranks fourth in points per game (1.93).
- In addition to goals per game and points per game, Ulfarsson is the ACC's leader in game winning goals (5), total goals (14), total points (29) and shots on goal per game (1.87). The Kopavogur, Iceland, native ranks fifth in the country in goals.
- Ulfarsson's next goal would tie him with his head coach, John Kerr (1986), Ali Curtis (2000) and Jay Heaps (1995) for eighth on the single season goals list with 15. He needs three more to tie a school record.
- Senior goalkeeper Eliot Hamill ranks near the top of several major statistical categories in the ACC, ranking second in the league in save percentage (0.776), saves per game (3.88) and total saves (66).
- With six shutouts this season, Hamill is one away from entering in a tie for eighth in the single season shutout rankings.
- Hamill also needs seven more saves to tie Justin Trowbridge (2004) for 10th on Duke's all-time single season save list with 73.
- Following Stroud's game winning goal against UCLA and Pariano's assist, the Blue Devils now have four players with 10 or more points. That is the most in one season by the program since 2014. Mesalles (9) and Felix Barajas (8) are closing in on giving the Blue Devils five 10-point scorers for the first time since 2007.
- The Blue Devils rank 18th in the nation in goal differential, outscoring opponents 40-19 over 19 games.
- The Blue Devils have gotten plenty of production from the freshman class, with 33 of the team's 118 points (28.0%) coming from them. Shakur Mohammed leads the way with 12 points, while Mesalles has nine, Barajas has eight and Jai Bean four. Mesalles and Mohammed were recently named to the ACC's All-Freshman Team for their efforts.
