DURHAM – Duke Alumni Engagement and Development honored two former Blue Devil football players, Michael Bennett and Heath Freeman, this past weekend during their awards ceremony.
Bennett was selected as the recipient of the Charles A. Dukes Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The award recognizes alumni volunteers who serve in Duke leadership roles and have devoted themselves to extraordinary, long-term efforts that help Duke further its mission. Bennett, a running back from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., lettered on the gridiron in 1973.
Freeman was honored with the Forever Duke Award, which recognizes alumni for excellent recent volunteer service to Duke, Duke alumni, and other alumni groups. Freeman, a Short Hills, N.J., native lettered as a placekicker for the Blue Devils in 2001.
"This year's alumni awardees are extraordinary individuals doing extraordinary things for Duke, their communities and the world," said Sterly L. Wilder '83, senior associate vice president of Duke Alumni Engagement and Development. "Our work for the Duke community is made possible by these incredible alumni, who volunteer, lead and inspire. As a fellow alum, I couldn't be more proud."
