DURHAM – The Duke men's soccer program earned three of the five individual ACC awards and had four players named to either an All-ACC or All-Freshman Team, as the league announced on Wednesday morning.
Sophomore Thorleifur Ulfarsson was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, sophomore Peter Stroud was named the ACC Midfielder of the Year and rookie Shakur Mohammed was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year. It is the first time in program history that the Blue Devils have taken home three of the major ACC awards.
Ulfarsson and Stroud were also voted to the All-ACC First Team, while Mohammed was named to the All-ACC Second Team. In addition, Mohammed and freshman Ruben Mesalles were tabbed to the ACC's All-Freshman Team.
Ulfarsson becomes the first Blue Devil to win the ACC Offensive Player of the Year award since Andrew Wenger in 2011 and just the fourth in program history. A native of Kopavogur, Iceland, Ulfarsson enters play on Wednesday as the NCAA leader in goals per game (1.08) and points per game (2.25), while also leading the ACC in total goals (13), game winning goals (4) and shots on goal per game (1.92). Ulfarsson was also named the national player of the week by College Soccer News, TopDrawerSoccer and the United Soccer Coaches this season.
Stroud joins Sean Davis as the only Blue Devils to be named ACC Midfielder of the Year in program history since the award's inception in 2014. Hailing from Chester, N.J., Stroud is amid a career season with three goals and three assists for nine points to rank third on the team. The midfielder has also played 1,357 minutes this season, playing a critical role in the counterattack and possession while aiding a defense that allows just one goal per game.
Mohammed joins an elite group of Blue Devils to be named ACC Freshman of the Year, joining Issa Rayyan, Wenger, Michael Videira and Jay Heaps. The Kumasi, Ghana, native was a part of a key one-two offensive punch with Ulfarsson, tallying three goals and six assists for 12 points. Mohammed earned five of his six assists setting up the striker, acting as a creator next to the finishing ability of Ulfarsson. Mohammed is also the first freshman to be named Second Team All-ACC since Rayyan.
Mesalles had a breakout season in his first taste of college soccer, tallying one goal and five assists for seven points. The Longboat, Fla., native is a traditional midfielder, who learned an entirely new position at left back and split the season between the two. Mesalles is also a primary set piece take for the Blue Devils, with two assists coming off set pieces, most recently against Virginia.
With three earning All-ACC nods, the Blue Devils now have 166 All-ACC honors all-time. Duke's three First Team honorees were the most in a year since 2012.
The Blue Devils will continue action in the ACC Championship with a battle against second-seeded Clemson on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
