DURHAM - Duke men's tennis junior
Andrew Zhang has been selected Duke's PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week after bringing home the ITA Carolina Regional Championship singles title.
Zhang defeated Wake Forest's Taha Baadi in the singles tournament finale to claim the Blue Devils' first individual title since 2011. He became the fifth player in program history to earn the singles title, and the first since volunteer assistant coach
Chris Mengel did so in 2011.
Henrique Cunha (2010),
Jonathan Stokke (2005) and
Ludovic Walter (2003 and 2004) also earned regional singles titles during their time as a Blue Devil.
In a five-day span, Zhang won seven matches, including one against No. 16 ranked Connor Thompson of South Carolina. During that time he played a total of 16 sets and only dropped two. After defeating Thompson in Monday's semifinals, Zhang faced seventh-seeded Baadi in the title match. Baadi outlasted Zhang in the opening set 7-5, but the Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native rallied to record back-to-back 6-1 victories in the final two frames to secure the win.
Â
Zhang will next travel to San Diego, Calif., this Thursday through Sunday for the ITA National Fall Championships.
