DURHAM – Duke women's tennis completed a packed day of play at two different events, wrapping up play at the ITA All-American Championships in Charleston, S.C. and completing day one at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
ITA All-American Championships
The Blue Devils concluded play at the ITA All-American Championships on Friday. The remaining member of the main draw, senior
Georgia Drummy, was forced to retire from her quarterfinal match just three games in, leaving the remainder of the day in the consolation draw.
The doubles duo of junior
Chloe Beck and sophomore
Karolina Berankova earned a win in the consolation round of 16, defeating Denver's Britt Pursell/Camille Verden-Anderson, 8-6. The win got the top Blue Devils duo to the consolation quarterfinal, where two set matches would resume. However, their run ended there, falling to No. 19 Georgie Axon/Adeline Flach of Auburn, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
Wildcat Invitational
The opening day of play in Evanston, Ill., was extremely successful for the Blue Devils, who went 5-1 in singles and doubles combined. The team faced opponents from Michigan State and Notre Dame on day one, with every win coming in straight sets.
Freshmen
Ellie Coleman and
Emma Jackson went 3-0, teaming up in doubles for a 6-4 win over Ayshe Can/Nicole Stephens of Michigan State. The two would move on to singles, where Coleman beat Can, 6-3, 6-3 and Jackson beat Stephens, 6-4, 6-2.
The No. 24 ranked duo of
Margaryta Bilokin and
Eliza Omirou made their season debut and picked up a win, beating Carrie Beckman/Yashna Yellayi of Notre Dame in convincing fashion, 6-2. Omirou would go on to add a straight set singles victory of her own against Beckman.
