CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior
Georgia Drummy has advanced to the quarterfinal of the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday, to lead a successful day two for Duke women's tennis.
Drummy faced off against Miami's 16th-ranked Isabella Pfennig, in a rematch of last season, where Pfennig prevailed in straight sets. This time, Drummy gained the upper hand and took the first set 7-6 (8). The first set was full of back-and-forth play, with the two players combining for seven break points. However, Drummy was able to hold firm to secure a tight tiebreaker.
Pfennig was able to respond with a tiebreaker win of her own in the second set, taking it 7-6 (5). However, Drummy didn't let the adversity affect her, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third set. While Pfennig earned a late service break, Drummy closed out the set and the match, taking the third set 6-2.
The Blue Devils would go 3-0 in singles on the day, as
Kelly Chen and
Chloe Beck each won matches in the consolation draw. Beck was the first on the board, defeating No. 64 Marlee Zein 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). Beck followed in the footsteps of teammate
Ellie Coleman, who defeated Zein at the Kitty Harrison Invitational earlier in the year.
Chen would soon follow, delivering the highest ranked win of the day when she defeated No. 11 Viktoryia Kanapatskaya of Syracuse, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The win was her first ranked victory of the season and highest ranked win since beating No. 8 McCartney Kessler at the NCAA Singles Championship last season.
Beck would be back in action with teammate
Karolina Berankova in doubles later in the day. The duo received a bit of luck with a walkover in the round of 32, but couldn't advance further, falling to No. 30 Briana Crowley/Christina Hand of Northwestern, 8-5.
All four players will be back in action on Friday, while the remaining four members of the Duke roster are set to open play at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill. The Blue Devils will face opponents from Michigan State and Notre Dame in day one.
